The picture opens in this manner

concerto really fell far short of what leave, camp in a nearby oasis and de-
the public expected. In addition to cide to occupy the fort in the morn-
this, the accompaniment which Mr.
Gabrilowitsch provided did not at all
times seem to fit in with the soloist's
part of the act; and if these little
slips passed over the beads of the
majority of the audience, they were
certainly noticeable to the initiate.
And that was sufficient to spoil a per-
fectly good intention.
Mr. von Dohnanyi excels as pi-

I the author's message. Ile plays and
fits perfectly into the musical frame
, of the concerto—a most ideal eon-
ception. Then as conductor Mr. Doh-
, nanyi is amazingly virile, dynamic
with the minimum of effort and move-
ment, and always direct in his indi-
cations of entrances and tempi. The
orchestra responded superbly to his
baton and gave a very fine perform-
ance to von Dohnanyi's "Hungarian
Rural Scenes," a tone poem in fine
movements. The music is gratefully
original, though the coloring is dis-
tinctly Magyar, which to say Hun-
garian. The various movements are
scored with a master band, and the
composer -- always melodious — has
not disdained the modern innovations
in dressing his themes. Of especial
interest is his penchant for the viola,
and here due credit must be given to
Herman Klodkin, leader of this choir
in the orchestra, who played the pas-
sages assigned to hint with a fresh-
' ness and a beauty of tone that must
have warmed the heart of the corn-
' poser. The composition found im-
mediate favor with the audience and
after Mr. von Dohnanyi had repeated-
ly responded to the applause he asked
the orchestra to rise and join in his
reception. They deserved this un-
usual honor.

Who killed the commandant? Who
fired the fort--and why? A thread
of this mystery runs entirely through
the play, which flashes back to 15
years before the opening scene and
reconstructs the mystery back again
to that scene.
