During the Democratic convention, when feeling was running high in-
side and outside of the convention, he delivered a speech as a Democrat.
Most of us thought it was a mistake; an error in judgment; an indiscreet
et; and so on and so forth. But Dr. Wise thought differently. If he
thought as we did he would not be Stephen S. Wise. I don't know of any
ram whose head sticks a little above the crowd who doesn't do many things
the crowd would do. That's why the crowd is the crowd and Wise is Wise.
Roosevelt was a much greater man and a much greater American than the
millions of his critics. He will live in history as one of the great Americans.
Yet he was always saying and doing things that were "indiscreet;" that
were "uncalled for;" that showed him to be an "egotist" and an "egoist."
But you see he was Theodore Roosevelt and because he was Theodore Roose-
velt he couldn't be Bill Jones or Billy Sunday -or William Jennings Bryan
or E. II. Harriman or the president of the Billion Dollar Trust Company.
But Roosevelt said what he thought and he said it in language easily under-
stood and he was prepared to stand by the consequences of his statements.

Financial Expert to
Address Men's Club:
On Tuesday evening, Jan. 12, at
6:30, a dinner meeting of the Men's
Temple Club will be given at which
the speaker will be Merryle S. Ru-
keyser, financial editor of the New
York Evening Journal and professor =
of journalism at Columbia. His sub- =
ject will be "Big Business and the 'a
Little Fellow." Mr. Rukeyser speaks
with authority upon his subject and
should be heard by all our men.
MRS. E. M. STERNBERGER
"The College of Tomorrow:"
Some of us fell in a dead faint when Rabbi Wise criticised President
Coolidge. I understand that some members of his congregation left the
hall; their sensibilities were so offended. If Wise doesn't approve of Cool-
idge he has a right to any so. If you don't like what he has to say, stay
way You will always find two or three others waiting to take your seat.
a
Why shouldn't Wise, if he feels that way, criticise the policies of Coolidge
with as much freedom, let us say, as Frank R. Kent, vice-president of the
Baltimore Sun? A great many clergymen attacked LaFollette; many at-
tacked Wilson. If it is right and proper to praise a President from the
pulpit, it should be equally right to criticise. But we are conventional folk;
most of us. We are uneasy when we hear a rabbi discuss a question or an
individual we consider immune from criticism. Dr. Wise believes in a free
pulpit; that's why he has a free synagogue. While we may think it wiser
for him not to say this or that, as we said at the outset, then he wouldn't

I was surprised to learn that in Uniontown, Pa., two high schools per-

aware of the character of the "entertainment," yet too much vigilance
cannot be exercised to keep our schools free from sectarian influence, espe-

sionaries can gain easy entrance to churches is, of course, no surprise; for
them such "converts" are meat and drink.

There are thousands and thousands of
