ANZIA YAZIERSKA

At last, we are to see Annie Yazier-
kies. "Salome of the Tenements" in
in the films.
I, or dramatic thrill, however, "Sa-
lome" had nothing on her authoress—
Miss Yazierska, herself.
Annie Yazierska is known in pri-
vate life—as Hattie Myers. Many
times Miss Myers hinted to her
friends, that some day, she would
cause a ripple or two On the banks of
literary fame. But her acquaintances
smiled—some even laughed.
With the royalties now pouring in,
Miss Myers seems to be having the
last and best laugh.

Samuel Goldwyn, the Jewish screen
producer, has just returned from Eng-
land where he sought to induce Ber-
nard Shaw to permit the filming of
some of his plays.
Mr. Shaw demurred. Goldwyn grew
eloquent. Beauty and fidelity were
promised. Shaw's work would lie
glorified by it, Goldwyn said:
"The trouble seems to he, 111r. Gold-
wyn, finally replied the playwright,
"you are interested chiefly in art,
while I am interested chiefly in mak-

We are hearing many stories now
about Max Gabel, but I believe, one of
the best has not yet been divulged.
It relates to the time when Gabel, in
the beginning of his histrionic career,
was playing in Cleveland. The show
was a colossal failure and Gabel walk-
ed the streets, as he anticipated the
inevitable closing of his house. Pac-
ing along, he passed a monument erec-
ted to Louis Kossuth.
The great Hungarian liberator was
on everyone's mind in those days, and
besides, Cleveland was thickly popu-
lated with Ilungarian Jew's.

COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
REPORTS ON LYNCHINGS

According to a statement by the
commission on race relations of the
Federal Council of Churches, 38
states were free from lynchings last
year. Three new states, that is, those
who before had records of lynchings,
which had clear records for 1924,
were Arkansas, Oklahoma and Vir-
ginia. Illinois and Kentucky, which
had been free of this evil for two
years, each had one case and South
Carolina and Tennessee, which had
been free for one year, also had one
case each. These states show, ac-
cording to the commission, that
lynching can be abolsihecl.
Professor Monroe M. Work of the
Tuskeegee Institute, Ala., said that

Great things are Si, be looked from
Schildkraut, unless the critics are sad-

known that many of the big screen
producers after Schildkraut's first
appearance in the movies, presented
him with most attractive offers. Ile
was said to have the handsomest pro-
file of any actor who ever played in
the silent drama.
But the idea of capitalizing his pro-
file did not appeal to Schildkraut. Ile
chose the legitimate stage as his ca-
reer, despite the lure of the greater
shekel bags of the screen.

Vaudeville Night:
At the last meeting of Pisgah
Lodge, No. 34, I. 0. B. B., it became
necessary to use the "Standing Room
Only" sign. A capacity audience en-
joyed a splendid program of enter-
tainment which followed a short busi-
ness session. The Misses Jessie
Phyllis Kopatz and Klein were par-
ticularly well received. "Sy" Fein-
berg, I'isiiah's own humorist, was in
splendid form and was forced to re-
spond to numerous encores. The
speaker of the evening was Charles
P. O'Neil, corporation counsel of the
City of Detroit.

"Why not a play about Kossuth,"
mused Gabel. Acting on the impulse,
Gabel set himself immediately at work
on the idea. In a short time, the play
was being shown to S. R. 0 crowds al
his Cleveland house.
That, Gabel told me, was the nearest
he ever came to complete extinction
in his career.
Rut all of these stories about Gabel
omit one important item—and that is
—his wife, Jeannie Goldstein, a star
Thespian herself.
The (labels lived at the Commodore,
but one eon find Miss Goldstein almost ,
anywhere. Next to Fannie Hurst, I
know of no one who journeys about so
much among all sorts and conditions of
people to study human nature as Miss
Goldstein. The odder the people come,
the better Miss Goldstein likes them.'
She was virtually raised on the stage,
having appeared before the footlights.
since about the age of four.
