It relates to the time when Gabel, in the beginning of his histrionic career, was playing in Cleveland. The show was a colossal failure and Gabel walk- ed the streets, as he anticipated the inevitable closing of his house. Pac- ing along, he passed a monument erec- ted to Louis Kossuth. The great Hungarian liberator was on everyone's mind in those days, and besides, Cleveland was thickly popu- lated with Ilungarian Jew's. Three new states, that is, those who before had records of lynchings, which had clear records for 1924, were Arkansas, Oklahoma and Vir- ginia. Illinois and Kentucky, which had been free of this evil for two years, each had one case and South Carolina and Tennessee, which had been free for one year, also had one case each. These states show, ac- cording to the commission, that lynching can be abolsihecl. Professor Monroe M.
