spiritual institution it takes no cognizance of men other
than in their spiritual relationships. If they did this
it would be tantamount to intellectual blindness or,
at best. short-sightedness. The fact that they dis-
cussed the above enumerated subjects indicates that
they have realized the need for an approach to Jewish
labor which requires tact, sympathy and understand-
ing. The Christian churches have for some time past
realized that they have a function to perform in the
relations between capital and labor, and that in any
disputes that may arise they cannot take an aloof and
detached position. They must use their ollices to bring
about a better understanding and kindlier feeling in
the heat of a bitter strike or controversy over factory
conditions. If they are remiss in their duty, and fail
to carry out their obligations, they cannot hope to have
the trust and confidence of labor, and in many of the
eastern communities Jewish labor bulks very large and
important.
We rather expected the discussions on Jewish labor
and the synagogue from the eastern seaboard. It brings
home to us the conviction that the American rabbinate
has a fruitful field for its numerous talents among or-
ganized Jewish workers which will bring greater re-
wards in human happiness and salvation than almost
any activity which has engaged the genius of the rab-
binate from the day of its inception.
In this work may they bring all the wisdom and
patience with which many generations of study has
endowed and equipped them.
