T
HE "FLINT SIX" car is now
a fact, and the prestige that
the new C. W. Durant produc-
tion is lending to the city of Flint
is already noticeable in the fame that
this city is gaining throughout the
land.
Mr. Durant has . promised Flint a
car that will give this great commun.
ity worldwide fame, and he has kept
his promise. The Flint Six plant is
already operating, and the great Star
Durant plant will begin to turn its
wheels before long. These two Durant
plants cover an area of over 130 acres.
The Flint Six plant alone has an area
of 1,500,000 square feet. There will
be 10 different lines of railroad tracks
when both plants are completed, and
over 32,000 feet of rail will be laid
on the ground, with facilities for near-
ly 400 cars. The loading and unload-
ing docks cover 113,110 feet and serve
as the most modern means of trans-
portation available in this country for
either raw materials or finished pro-
ducts.

An announcement by Mr. Durant
that is of particular importance to
Flint is to the effect that by Jan. 1 ,
6,090 men will be employed in the
Flint plants, thereby affording the ad -
ded opportunity of making this com -
munity the most prosperous and fast-

The three-story Durant adminis-
tration building facing Saginaw street
will be fully equipped as a modern of-
fice covering floor apace of 140X100
feet. It will accomodate the execu-
tives of both the Flint Six and the
Star plants.
The main building is three stories
high. It will be 900 feet long and
have three great wings, two of which
will be as high as the main building
and altogether there will be 750,000
square feet of floor space.
In the receiving department occupy-
ing two of the wings are 60-foot bay
cranes with runways and over-hang-
ing extensions. The finished product
is taken care of by railroad approach-
es on the third wing and 150,000
square feet underground adjoining the
test rooms, where drive-sways are to
be lined up. This space on the lower
floor provides for 1,000 cars, which it
is predicted will be needed by the end
of September.

One of the most important features
of the Flint chassis is the Durant
Tubular Backbone (patent applied
for), a hollow steel cylinder which is
hot riveted through flanges at each
end to the second and third cross mem-
bers and forces them to remain in par-
allel position and so keep the whole
frame in rigid alignment at all times.
The Durant Tubular Backleme pre-
vents the usual distortion of the frame
from road wear and other causes
thereby keeping the working units in
alignment and protecting thaw from
wear. It protects the body in the same
way from loosening joints, creaks and
rattles and preserves it in good en-
dition through longer periods of use.
