Rosa Raise and Giacomo Rimini
to Appear in Concert Monday.

Rosa Raise and Giacomo Rimini
will appear in concert at Arena Ger-
dens this Monday evening.
Raisa is one of the youngest,
as well as one of the most brilliant,
in the long succession of Jewish ar-
tists who on both the operatic and
dramatic stage have given glory to
their race. Mme. Raise is not a Jew-
ish artist in the narrow nationalist
sense of the term; true to her race's
proverbial breadth of sympathy and
vision she has made all art her prov-
ince, and is equally at home in the
songs of Russian, German, Italian,
French or English composers, while
in Yiddish music she has a field in
which she is unrivalled. Speaking all
these languages fluently, she adds
that peculiarly Jewish quality of sym-
pathy which enables her to penetrate
into the soul of each of them.
In the realm of opera Mme. Raisa
has won her greatest triumphs, in the
works of Italian composers, as it was
to Italy she fled, a refugee from the
horrible pogroms of her native Bus-
sin, and It was Italy who trained her
for the operatic stage, Italy who gave
her alike her debut and her first tri-
umphs. No wonder that she has de-'
cloned she loves of all nations Italy
and the Italians best, though of re-
cent years the land of Verdi and
Puccini has been forced to share her
affections with America.
"Hard work and patiencd are the
essentials of operatic success or suc-
-mil in the concert field,' said Mme.
Raise recently. "It was Mme. Mar-
chesi who taught me the value of

positions for which one is not ready.
I remember hearing Mme. Marchesi lodges in particular, are hereby warn-

preme thnig is not to do a thing now,
but to do it well when you do it.', •
"I have never forgotten this advice
and I never shall. The trouble with
young singers is that often they have
never listened to thin advice even if
they have received it. We live in an
age of hurry, and youth is impatint
to be up and doing. This is as it should
be, for it shows that youth is awake.
But age has also its wisdom. We who
ore young are too often impaitent with
this wisdom and our impatience we
pay for with bitter tears. Better
three or four years of unremitting
study than a failure at ■ debut. I
knew 13 operas thoroughly before I
made my debut at I'arma, and ever
since then I have considered 13 my
lucky number.'

and Giacomo Rimini concert follows:
