Jews who desire to make easy their path to life by adopting Christianity
will no longer be able to do so if a movement started by a Catholic faction
in Kiel, Germany, is successful. This group is opposing the collection of
money by the KonsIstorium for a Jewish mission. You can't de-Judaize a
man by religion, as Jewishness is more than faith, they contend, and a
baptized Jew remains one, "internally."

The Galician town of Starysambur was swept by lire. Seventy dwell-
ings were destroyed, 40 of which were Jewish. Two "beth meddrasim" also
went up in flames. The homes visited by the flames were those of the most
destitute Jews. The houses of the better situated Jews are all overcrowded
and it is virtually impossible to accommodate even temporarily the fire
victims. Their condition is thus one of great distress.

The Arab director of the Government Teachers College, Jerusalem, has
turned down the only Jewish applicant for entrance into the school. The
reason officially given by the director is that there is no vacancy in the
school. While there are a number of Jewish teachers' colleges, the fact
that the government school, under Arab direction, has turned down the
single Jewish applicant has evoked great indignation in Jewish circles.
Estelle M. Sternberger of New York City, national executive secretary
of the Council of Jewish Women, will serve on the reception committee of
the Jewish Council of Greater New York, to welcome Israel Zangwill upon
his arrival on Oct. 8. Mrs. Sternberger is representing the Council of
Jewish Women on the American Peace Award, which is promoting public
interest in the Bok peace prize of $100,000, at a meeting to be held Oct. 3.
Need for Centralised Body.
The need for a central organization
taking in all the elements in Jewry
thus becomes obvious. Dr. Cyrus Ad-
ler, Jacob Billikopf and others, in ser-
ies of articles, have recently advoca-
ted the formation of such a body, and
the American Jewish Congress, in con-
tinuing its existence, quotes the same
reasons for the need of a centrally
unified force to defend Jewish rights.
But who is there big enough to create
such an organization, and what body
is strong and responsible enough to
accomplish the gigantic task? The
Congress has lost much of its early
prestige by its Inactivity of the past
two years. The American Jewish
Committee has long ago been discred-
ited and the road to union in Israel
is blocked. Will the present Congress
accomplish its purpose? If it does
then it shall live as a force for much
good for our people but its purpose
will certainly not be achieved by the
mere passing of stereotyped resolu-
tions. Action and not words are need-
ed now.

A proposal that the German Reichsbank be boycotted as a protest of Israel Zangwill marks perhaps the
most
important feature of the confer-
against Dr. Hilferding, the Jewish Socialist, who is Finance Minister in
Stressmann's cabinet, is made in Hitler's organ of the Bavarian Fascisti,
the Volkische Beobachter. The paper declares Hilferding's appointment,
including as one of its duties of office the supervision of the Reichsbank,
is but another step towards 'the enslavement of the German masses by the
united Jews."

The renomination of Justice Nathan Bijur to the New Yerk Supreme
Court bench by the Republicans is assured, according to political gossip.
It is believed too, that the Republicans favoring a non-partisan judiciary
will support Justice Joseph M. Proskeur, who Is • Democratic appointee of
Oovernor Smith. It is thought also likely tint Tammany may support Jus-
tice Bijur. Friends of Justice Abraham G. Meyer of the City Court say
that William Randolph Hearst will back him.

Sir Herbert Samuel has returned to his post after his vacation spent in
England and the continent. Ile was greeted by leading officials of the
government and on Tuesday evening last a garden party was held in honor
of the High Commissioner at Governor Storr'n house. Four hundred per-
sons, representing all the communities, were present. It is learned that
Sir Ilerbert brings the consent of the Colonial Office for the legalization of
the Vaad Leumi and the Jewish communities, without the taxation privi-

Polish Fascist' and monarchists are waiting their turn to overthrow the
government and seize the reins themselves, according to the Kurjer Poranny
of Warsaw. The Fascisti have organized themselves in a thoroughly military
fashion and several divisions of their forces are available in Warsaw ready
for instant action when the military coup Is finally sprung. The movement
is supported by the RozwoJ. The monarchist propaganda is conducted by
Prince Zdzislaw Lubomirski and monarchist circles have lately shown a
feverish activity.

Twelve Warsaw Jews ate under arrest as the result of a disturbance
which followed the action of the Jewish labor co-operative store keeping
its place open for "business Jts usual" on Yom Kippur. Observant Jews
gathered about the place protesting the sacrilige. The situation became
somewhat threatening and the police arrested a dozen of those gathered
at the shop. Shortly after the arrests were made the Jewish co-operative
capitulated to the religious sentiments of the community and closed Its
doors.

Professor CUM the Anti-Semitic leader, and a group of his associates,
supported and financed by a German monarchist group, were planning a
"putch" on the Roumanian government similar to Kappa "putch" in Ger-
many. This fact was unearthed by government authorities and has created
a sensation. One of the objectives of the "putch" was the annihilation of
the Jews.. The Minister of Justice has hurried to Sledenburgen to consult
with Minister of Communications Siguratan, in .order to take measures to
thwart the projected coup d'etat.

Four Jewish men and women have been arrested In Warsaw for a crime
alleged by the anti-Semitic press to have been committed during the Ger-
man occupation period. These Jews, it is charged, living in the township
of Jesow, Brzezin district, informed the Germans of the Poles who had
stolen a German military automobile and sold It to the Russians. As a
result of this information, they charge, one Christian was executed by the
Germans and a number imprisoned. The anti-Semitic press does not account
for the reason there was such delay In filing the charges, if they are -true.
Meanwhile, much is made about the "treason" of the Jews.

According to gossip in Washington, many of the Democrath believe that
Henry Ford's aspirations toward obtaining the Muscle Shoals concession
will prove the undoing of his presidential candidacy. The argument is that
if Mr. Ford gets the federal nitrate and power plant in Alabama, he auto-
matically will become • government contractor, or at least be immersed in
such interlocking relations with the government that he would be ineligible

would constitutionally bar him from the Presidency. In addition to the
