as the censors of the lives of their fellow citizens. Georgia, as usual, takes
the black ribbon. If something isn't done by the government of the United
States to indicate that this is a country of law and order, we shall be dis-
crt ailed in the eyes of the world. One wonders what has caused this ware
of r..ckless lawlessness. It is pretty near time that our President coma

Now we have the Knights•of the Blazing Ring, a sort of an antidote for
Ku Kluxism. Sometimes I fear that the cure for these things is worse than
the disease. There is growing un two antagonistic groups, both cradled in
the lap of prejudice, and unless they are killed in infancy they will grow to
he a menace to free government. The next Congress should introduce legis-
lation to once and for all rid this country of these dangerous elements.

Over in France Poincaire made short work of the "Birth of a Nation,"
as he didn't propose that disorders and ill feeling should result between
colored people and foreign visitors. He ordered the picture to the ash heap

from • French columnist:

"We are polite. Continually, in restaurants, in buses, at times
even at our own bed and board, we find ourselves near people who
disgust us. But we know that these people, as well as ourselves,
have a right to be there. There are those who to not like priests;
those who do not like Jews; those who do not like superior officers.
But a civilized man must endure the society of his fellow man even
when they differ from him in race, color and costume. If not, one
would have to live on a desert island, which would be diflieult, for
there are not enough desert islands to go around."

"CONTINUE YOUR ALERTNESS"

By SENATOR JAMES COUZENS

To the Jewish People of Michigan:

During the months of June, July and August, I know that all too many
kindly disposed readers sneeze at "Random Thoughts"—not because they
want to, but they can't help it. They have what is misnamed rose or hay
fever and it is such a miserable, uncomfortable affliction that no one can
blame them for sneezing at anything or anybody. But at the newly opened
clinic at Victory Memorial Hospital, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, they use serums
that are • sure cure for this annoying trouble. Maybe your doctor might

oblige you by finding out about it.

The work of assimilation noes quietly but efficiently forward in this
country. The engagement of the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer Schiff
to a Mr. Hall, son of Mrs. E. Wadsworth Hotchkiss, indicates intermarriage.
Ordinarily the marriage of a Jew and a Gentile would not have a marked
influence, but when the granddaughter of Jacob H. Schiff, whose intensely
of the outstanding Jewish finures of his time,

marries out of the faith, it is likely to have a for reeching influence. In
other words, it will encourage the idea among those who would ordinarily
resent the intrusion of such a thought. The more intimate social life that
is prevalent among the wealthier groups of Jews and non-Jews tends toward

intermarriage among the "best families."

A lady by the name of Elizabeth King Black wields • virile pen, to say

she writes to the New York World:

"What an ironic commentary on the 0.000 years' labor of the
so-called enlightened churches is Edward Bok's offer in the interest
of peace between nations. Had the churches taught that wars of con-
quest for economic advantage—for love id sugar, oil, mammon, or
slaves—were a direct challenge to 'covet not thy neighbor's goods,'
the world today would not be seething in the cauldron of doubt and
despair—the altars of God would not be desecrated by false

prophets."

The approaching holiday of Rosh Ha-Shanah, the Jew-
ish New Year, suggests to me that it is opportune to send
you a message of greeting, even though I am not your
mayor, as I was at last year's celebration.
Many things have happened since my last message of
greeting and many things will continue to happen in this
country of ours.
What I desire to say at this particular time is that you
keep up your courage and your interest in the things that
are for the best interests of all the people of our country.
More and more organizations, leagues and associations are
being formed for all kinds of purposes. It is time that
sonic of these were analyzed to get at the motives. It is
time that no minority was permitted to organize and get
so strong that it could curtail the religion and other liber-
ties of the people of this country.
I hope that you will continue your alertness in the
interests of not only your own people, but the people of
all the United States, where you have found such great
opportunities. This kept constantly before you will assure
your continued freedom and liberty and protection of the
greatest country in all the world.

There is a great similitude between the "Tkiath Shofer,"
the sounding of the horn on Rosh Ha-Shanah and that of
Yom Kippur (luring the time Israel inhabited its own land
Erezyisrael, in reference to which we are commanded thus:
"Then shalt thou make proclamation with the blast of the
horn 011 the tenth (lay of the seventh month in the day of
atonement shall ye make proclamation with the horn
throughout all your land. And ye shall hallow the
fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land
unto all the inhabitants thereof : it shall be a jubilee unto
you ; and ye shall return every man unto his family."—
(Leviticus 25. 9, 10.)
This is the manner in which we are enjoined concerning
the historic Yom Kippur, and similarly on Rosh Ha-Shanah
we are bidden to hallow it and proclaim liberty unto all.
This is the proclamation Israel has made throughout all
times. "A sojourner as well as one that is born in the
land." The foreigner like the native. One and the same
statute for all. No distinction made between man and
man, between race and race.
The psalmist says: "I will make mention of Rahab
and Bablon as among them that know me. Behold Philis-
tia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this one was born there."—
(Psalms 87. •.)
That means, the Babylonians, the Philistines, etc., they
were wont to point out and say: "This one was not born
there. He is a foreigner. He is undesirable. His rights
and privileges should be restricted. Let our political, eco-
nomic and social institutions exclude him, shut him out.
Let the doors of our universities, our houses of learning be
shut upon him. He was born over there."' This was their
attitude towards the stranger, but of Zion it shall be said:
"This man and that was born in her." Each and every
one is looked upon like a native, like one born in her. The
same statute for everybody.
The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia carries the inscription:
"And thou shalt proclaim liberty throughout the land, unto
all the inhabitants thereof." The horn of Rosh Ha-Shanah
is making the same proclamation, with the addition: "And
ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall
return every man unto his family."
In accord with this proclamation is Lord Balfour's Dec-
laration, which was solemnly ratified by the diplomats at
San Remo, by ex-President Woodrow Wilson and by the
late President Warren G. Harding.
The declaration. in spirit, reads: "Let Israel return to
his possession, to his family."
There in Zion he left his "mishpochah," his fathers, his
prophets, his kings, his learned and his wise of whom he
is justly proud, and of whom the civilized world ought to
be proud.
This is what the sounding of the horn on Rosh Ha-
Shanah signifies.
Furthermore, in blowing shofar, the horn of a ram is
used in reminiscence of the Akedah, the binding of Isaac.
This was not the only Akedah. Many a son of Israel has
since then been bound and slaughtered in many a dark age
when the words "anti thou shalt proclaim, etc.," have not
been heard. Israel has then been the lamb for many a
burnt offering.
Even now to this very day the process o f the Akedah
still goes on in many a country where our brethren sojourn.
We therefore cannot call upon them to come forward and
carry out the command conveyed by the sounding of the
horn anti help in the upbuilding of Zion. But to our
brethren in this blessed country of America we say:
"Listen to the sound of the horn. Let liberty be pro-
claimed throughout the land, and ye - shall return every
one unto his possession and everyone unto his family."
Let Israel return to his land, to his family, and to his
people.

Our 15th Anniversary Sale
Opens Saturday

September 8th

Every effort has been put forth to make this the greatest selling
event in our history. Months of preparation are back of this event. Our
buyers have been visiting the leading furniture centers of America, and
have scoured the market to secure what we believe to be the most amaz-
ing collection of furniture values ever assembled by any one store.
Never before in our history have we known of any store making
such elaborate preparations for any sales event.
It would require page after page in The Jewish Chronicle to pic-
ture and describe the wonderful values to be found on our sales floors.
The reputation of the Finsteiwa!'.1 Furniture Company however, is
such that merely the statement that this Fifteenth Anniversary will be
the greatest selling event in our history should be sufficient to cause
everyone who has the slightest need of furniture to want to profit by
this event.
