Before the war Palestine shared
the lethargy of the whole of Asiatic
Turkey. It is true that Jewish colo-

may be from several points of view,
it had the naturally but highly un-
pleasant consequence of tying up con-
siderable means that were greatly
needed in commerce and industry,
thus causing a very noticeable finan.
cial tightness which gave rise to the
cry of a "crisis" in Palestine. Add
to this that last year's crop was bad,

The many Jewish customers of the

will be interested in the announce-
ment that W. E. Terrell is now man.
alter of this popular company, which
is now located at 8829 East Jefferson
avenue.
"Cleaning shades contributes not
only to the better appearance of a
home but also to the general health
of the family," according to Mr. Ter-
rell.
The large volume of business ne-
cessitated the removal of the con
pany to larger quarters, officials
stated. The company has the patron.
age of some of the largest apartments
and hotels in the city.
"A shade may be cleaned and put
in its original condition for approxi-
mately one-third the cost of a new
shade," Mr. Terrell said. "The pro-
cess employed to renew the appear-
ance of old shades removes one of
the chief obstacles to a complete
house-cleaning."

BEN SELLING CARRIES

SUCCESSFUL PORTLAND
KEREN HAYESOD DRIVE

The full quota of $15,000 which
was set for Portland, Ore., in the
last Keren Ilayesml campaign in that
city has been fully subscribed under
the leaderim of Ben Selling. Mr.
Selling, who is one of the leading citi-
zens of Portland and one of the most
energetic and respected Jewish lead-
ers on the Pacific coast, espoused the
cause of the rebuilding of Palestine
and with hi. customary enthusiasm
and effective leadership united all
classes of Jewry of Portland in sup-
port of the cause. Mr. Selling, who
is identified with the Reform Jewish
element, is equally respected by all
classes. He has taken a lead in all
civic and specifically Jewish move-
ments in his own city and on the
Coast, and figured in the war relief
campaign as one of the largest con-
tributors and most influential work-
ers. Ile assumed the leadership of
the Keren Ilayesod drive as a result
of the recent visit to that city of the
Keren Hayesod delegation consisting
of Dr. Joseph Silverman, Ribbi Eme-
ritus of Temple Emanu-El, and Dr.
Alexander Goldstein, one of the lead-
ers of Russian Jewry.
Mr. Selling was ably assisted,
among others, by M. Glickman, a
Russian Jew who settled in Portland
17 years ago and who has combined
with his material success a generous
interest in all Jewish causes, and Z.
Swett, a leading business man of
Portland, who has bene active for the
Keren Ilayesod since its establish-
ment in the United States.

moment that all the industrial enter-
prises that have been or will be start-
ed will succeed. Failures are not only
bound to occur, but to be very fre-
quent. Those who are discouraged
by them do not understand the prob.
lam. The fact rennin's, however, that
they have to be reckoned with by
those whose task it is to finance in-
dustry. A considerable part of the
failures is due to insufficient means.
Part of the capital lacking can be
supplied in the form of credit, either
ordinary bank credit or credit of a
special kind from special industrial
syndicates or funds. Part of the
means, the greater part, has to be
supplied in the form of working capi-
tol. Again the Anglo-Palestine Com-
pany has to come in here, although
it is evident that, if it is to follow
a prudent coursit. it can never be ex-
pected by itself to finance the whole
of industry. Even, however, such
credits as it will be able to grant,
compatible with sound banking prin-
ciples, will demand, if industry ex-
tends, considerable additional capital.
It will in a fair measure be the task
of the Keren Hayesod to strength-
en the capital of our financial insti-
tutions in order to enable them to
meet the legitimate demands for
credit.
