Mrs. Abby Toplett (originally Top-

dresser and dropped a peignoir of hen-

Next she took a pair of elastic corsets
and strained to adjust them about her
ungainly avoirdupois. With a little

exertion, she then reached for the bot-

As she was dressing now in prepar-

Toplett had not the faintest premoni-

her social Waterloo.
She arrived at thed , soeiety's head-
quarters at three; it was fashionable
to be late. The members nodded
pleasantly to her as she waddled in,
panting, and all aflutter, her pudgy
face beaming with good-nature and
generosity.
After the card game, the president

"Mrs. Spivak—oh, Mutterchen, you
mean!' Certainly! Step this way I"
Ile escorted her to the first floor
and ushered her into a room at the
end of a long corridor. It was small,
but comfortably furnished. By an
open window sat a little old woman
ofperhaps 84. She was dressed in
a plain garment of spotless gray with
a soft fichu of white around her neck.
lier sheiteled head was bowed and
her hands were folded passively on
her lap.
"Good afternoon, Mutterchen!"
greeted Mr. Epstein kindly. "I have
brought you a visitor."

one's heart.
"So?" she muttered, shrugging in-

regarded as an object of pity.
"It's Mrs. Ilarris," announced that
lady softly. "Mutterchen, don't you
remember me? I came to see you
two weeks ago."
"Nein," replied the blind woman.
"S uch a many come, you know,

in Yiddish: "Only those I want, those
I hunger for—they never come!"
By this time Mr. Epstein had quiet-

"That's exactly what I want to talk
to you about, little mother," said
Mrs. Harris, reverting to what Yid-

you have no idea what a heart of gold
Mrs. Toplett has. She is greatly in-

she paused a moment, then hurled her
thunderbolt—"particularly since her
own mother is in one!" She turned up-
on Mrs. Toplett and her eyes blazed
with contempt.
"Wha—a --- what do you mean.. "

the withering glances of the others.

ROUMANIAN CHURCH
METROPOLIT PRIMUS
RAPS ANTI-SEMITES

BUCHAREST.—(J. T. A.) — The
Roumanian Metropolit Primus has re-
ceived in audience Chief Rabbi Dr.
Nemierower and Deputy Dr. Filder-
mann, who made representations to
him against the anti-Semitic agita.
Hon conducted by Professor Cuza.
They pointed out that in his latest
writings and speeches Professor Cuza
had alleged that the rabbis demand
the killing of Christians, and that he
referred to the Jews as a whole as

The Primus assured the delegation
that he was taking action against
these allegations. Ile reminded them
that while he was still a bishop at the
time of the Beilis trial, he had taken
a strong attitude against the blood
libel.
The Jewish religion, he said, was
the first to pronounce against mur-
der. He always sent representatives
to Jewish ceremonies in order to show
that he regarded the Jews as a broth-
er people.
The Primus regarded the anti-
Semitic movement not only as dan-
gerous but that it has no basis what-
ever for its existence. The propa.
gentle of hatred of which it consisted
was un-Christian. The Jews were es-
sential to the well being of the coun-
try. They were a patriotic element
and keeping them out of universities
only made it impossible for them to
come closer to Roumanian culture.
It was a mistaken policy to estrange
the Jews. They should be drawn
closer and made part of the Rou-
manian people. That was the only
way to consolidate the country.
