The Polish police are now curtailing the activities of a band of thugs
who made it their business to molest Jews leaving Poland. One of their
schemes was to prey upon these immigrants who "stole" their way across
the border. Catching sight of the unhappy immigrant, they would rob him
of his goods, threatening to turn him over to the police for traveling with-
out a passport if he informed on them.

allied with the Left Wing, succeeded in defeating the measure.

The first Jewish insurance company in Palestine, perhaps in the world ,
came into being with the official announcement that the Judean Insurance
company has been registered with the government. The company, which is
sponsored by the Order Sons of Zion of America, will start business with
a capital of $125,000. At present only life policies will be written, but it
is hoped eventually to widen it. scope to include all forms of insurance.
Forty-one per cent of the Jewish immigrants who have gone to Pales_
tine during 1922 are from Poland, Ormsby Gore, on behalf of the Colonial
Office, announced in the British House of Commons. Fourteen per cent
are from the Ukraine. America contributed only 2 per cent and England
ranks lowest in the number of Palestine settlers, sending less than one-
half of 1 per cent of the tota limmigrants. The figures were made known
by Gore in reply to a query put by Sir Anderson.
Opposition of the London Daily Express to Zionism was started at the
instance of a number of British Jews, according to a cable received from
Lord Beaverbrook, owner of the paper, now visiting Palestine. Beaver-
brook further informs his paper that he has conferred with the Grand
Mufti of Jerusalem and other Arab leaders and announces his intention of
continuing his attacks on Zionism. "The Arabs," Beaverbrook cables, "are
not anti-Semitic but anti-Zionistic. They wish Zioniam to go but Great
Britain to remain in Palestine."

Anti-Semitic students at the Riga University went on strike for a day
as a protest against the government's rejection of the "percentage norm"
Sn for
Jewish students. As the professors' council recommended to the gov-
ernment the establishment of such a norm. the Semitic students claim to
be very much surprised at the government's flat refusal to concur. The
anti-Semites are circulating a petition for signatures which calls upon the
government to submit the issue to a referendum. The Jewish students at
the Latvian university, it is estimated, approximate 15 per cent of the
total student body.

Thousands of the Falashas, the "black Jews" of Abyssinia discovered
by Dr. Faitelovitch, are embracing Christianity. according to a report pre-
sented by Rev. Feld, a foreign missionary, at the sessions of the London
Missionary Society. Fald has just returned from Amyssinia. He declares
that the loyal Falashas ill-treat the Christian Jews, but that the latter are
willing to be martyrs for their new faith. Missionaries at the conference
admitted that their attempts otherwise, exclusive of Abyssinia, towards the
conversion of Jews have brought little results. "We need the prayers of
all good Christians if we are to succeed in this work," one of the mission-
aries said.

Charges that 10,000 aliens barred by the immigration law filtered into
the United States during the past year and that the purpose of the immi-
gration law is being constantly defeated by the pressure brought to bear
by friends of excluded immigrants is contained in a series of articles being
run by the New York Tribune. One of the immigrant aid societies, the
writer declares, employs a $15,000-a-year attorney at Washington to repre-
sent it in these cases. The article also charges the stringent law has re-
sulted in stimulating the smuggling of immigrants into the country by way
of Cuba and Mexico. Immigrant smuggling has obtained the status of a
regular business on the border, he contends.
"Henry Ford is a remarkable man and is deeply interested in the Pales-
inian question," Ronald Storrs, Governor of Jerusalem, said as he boarded
the Cunarder Berengaria to return to Palestine. Storrs, who has been in
the United States nearly a month, visited Ford at Detroit. While here
Storrs refused to be quoted on Zionism. "I find everywhere in America
great interest and kind feeling for the problems of reconstruction," he said.
"Leaving, I can only say that all American visitors who come to the Holy
Land will receive a most hearty welcome. The city of Jerusalem is 2,500
feet above sea level and is much cooler than Cairo, so that tourists can
visit Palestine after they have finished their trip up the Nile. April and
May are delightful months to spend in Palestine."
In a discussion in the British House of Commons, Ormsby Gore an-
nounced that its Palestine department of immigration had netted a surplus
of 11,000 over its expenses. Mr. Gore's statement was in reply to a query
by Mr. Lorimer as to whether the Zionists were bearing any of the expense
of the immigration work. A number of queries as to the Palestine situa-
tion were put to Gore in the (louse of Lords by Lord Ansley. In reply
Gore said that the average number of immigrants monthly during 1923 was
65. During the month of February a total of 2,500 were unemployed. This
latter number, however. is not of Jewish unemployed exclusively, but of all
classes. Replying to the question as to whether the immigrants were re- I
ligious, Gore said he hardly thought any Jew would come to Palestine unless
he possesses some religious convictions, although the immigrants may not
be orthodox.

Jewish refugees from Russia coming to Riga as a temporary stopping I
point to wait for an opportunity to emigrate to the United States and other
countries are finding their stay in Riga very costly. The Latvian govern-
ment has raised the fee for a transit visa extension to a sum that is beyond
the means of most of the immigrants. Each immigrant who has a passport
and whose leaving the country is only a question of time is taxed $100

month for an extension of the privilege of staying. Those not so fortunate
are considered under the status of "interned" except that they must pay
the government 205 Latvia roubles for each day of their stay in the country.1
On account of the filling up of the Russian quota to America, the refugees
are unable to leave for the United States. Their numbers are consequently
daily growing. With the doors of the United States and virtually all other
countries closed to them and with the Latvian government fast "eating up"
what little means they have left, the distress of the wanderers can be easily

that is all we ask, that the non-Jew
be consistent with us. If an institu-
tion is anti-Semitic, we would feel
much happier as Jews if the anti-
Jewishness were open. We will then
know whom to look out for and whom
to fight. But we abhorr inconsistency.
It smacks too much of Czarism.
Whether it is the highest institution

we ask of them: Don't pat us on the

ready to stab us with the other. Eith-

us your unfriendly cards. Only then
will we feel safe.
Missionaries Among Falashas,

Jews" of Abyssinia, who were discov-
ered by Professor Faitelovitch, are
embracing Christianity. Feld also
declared that the loyal Falashas ill

I ly recognizes here the language of
the professional missionary who mag-
i nifies numbers for the sake of add-
ing importance to his position. The
missionaries at the London confer-
ence at which Fold made the above
report admitted that their attempts,
exclusive of Abyssinia, towards the
conversion of Jews, have brought lit-
tle results. It appears from this that
Rev. Fald has succeeded in "blind-
ing the truth" from those who sup-
! plied the funds for his missionary
efforts.

The following extract from the ad-
dress delivered by Louis Marshall at
the dinner in honor of Dr. Chaim
Weizmann, on the occasion of the
opening of the New York Keren
Ilayesod campaign, contains a lesson
for those ". . . of the Mosaic per-
suasion" who have aimed at destroy-
ing the Zietnist ideal:
I told you that I am not a
Zionist. Somebody will probably
say, tell us what you are.
I can
only answer in the ancient words
which have resounded through the
ages: 'Ivri Onochi'—'I am a Jew.'
Nothing Jewish is alien to me. I
therefore find it entirely consistent
to have spoken in this room at the
Golden Jubilee of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations.
I find' it consistent to be the chair-
man of the board of trustees of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America, and I find it equally con-
sistent to appear here among Zion-
ists to speak for Palestine."

Don't Turn Detroit Over
to a Political Machine
James W. Inches
For
Mayor
Two years' service as Commissioner of Health and four years as Commissioner
of Police have proved to Detroit the capacity of Dr. Inches as an executive.
Under his administration the Detroit Police Department became the acknowledged
best and cleanest big city force in America. Crime was reduced greatly. He created
the Women's Division, which has handled thousands of cases and saved hundreds of
young girls from the stigma of police records. Department promotions were based
on merit only and without regard to politics, creed or nationality.
Dr. Inches as Mayor would conduct all city departments on this merit system, so
as to have city business handled efficiently and economically.
Himself a Detroit taxpayer, he stands for the lightest possible tax burdens on
Detroiters.
He stands for development of the M. 0. lines to the highest possible degree of effi-
cient service; for their extension to outlying districts, the work to be paid for out of
earnings of the lines; for the development of rapid transit through subways to re-
lieve congestion; for shelters for car patrons in Cadillac Square and at busy factory
points.
