STEADY GROWTH

. IN NUMBER OF TELEPHONES
IN UNITED STATES

VIENNA.—(J. T. A.)—While ad-
mitting that the party led by Dr. Sei-
pel now in control of the government
is anti-Semitic, the Chancellor of the
Austrian Union assured a Jewish
deputation that the present struggle
in the Austrian seats of higher learn-
ing is not "dangerous." The deputa-
tion which waited on the Chancellor
included Chief Rabbi Chajes, Profes-
sor Pick, and Ilerr Friedman, vice-
president of the Jewish Cultural As-
sociation.
After drawing the Chancellor's at-
tention to the anti-Semitic demands
for rigid enforcement of the percent-
age norm against Jewish students, the
Jewish representatives declared that
the support given these demons in the
course of Parliamentary debates was
more menacing than the unconstitu-
tionla "numerus clausus." To this the
Chancellor replied that it was true
the "anti-Semitic banner" was often
raised in Parliament, but that the peo-
ple as a whole were well-meaning, and
will not tolerate discrimination
against Jews who, he said were "loy-
al and patriotic."

The growth of the telephone business in the United States, as shown

'n the above diagram by the bars representing the total number of tele-

phones for each year from 1900 to date has been continuous and steady.
Year by year the business has expanded, without regard to financial de-

pressions, wars or other disturbing influences. From a little over
1,350,000 telephones December 81, 1900, to nearly 14,000,000 tele-
phones December 81, 1921, represents an increase of over 900 per cent,

a growth far in excess of the growth in population or in business as a
whole.
With only one-sixteenth of the world's population, the United States
leas nearly two-thirds of the world's telephones.
