POSTHUMOUS COMEDY BY

TO BE PRODUCED IN N. Y.

Ancient Ritual Horn of Israel
One of the novelties of the coming
theater season will lie the production
of a comedy which was recently dis-
covered among the writings of the late
ti 51 Schaikewitz-Schomer, the fam-

playwright.
The comedy was written shortly be-

would have been produced before had

it nut been for the fact that the manu•
script was host and was only recently
found by his children. This Schomer
posthumous comedy, as we are in-
formed, excels in genuine humor even
his own famous theater pieces, such
as "Die Kokette Damen," (The Co-
quettes), "Die lmmigraten," (The
Immigrant,) "Haman the Second" etc.
It is not yet certain where the play
will be produced, except that it will be
put on by one of the better Yiddish
theaters in New York.
Rose Shooter and Miriam Shower-
Zunser, daughters of Schumer the
authors of "Eine Fun Folk" (One of
many,) which was successfully pro-
duced last season with Bertha Kalich
in the title role, have just completed
a new play from Ameritan Jewish life
on a very interesting subject, practi-
rally left untouched heretofore in Am-
erican-5'iddish dramatic literature.
The play will be produced this coming
season in one of the most prominent
play houses in Ne wYork.

Just as the hidden spark in the dying embers may be
brought to a bright flame by applying .a current of air, so
does the blowing of the Shofar revivify and bring into flame
the innermost sparks of Judaism which are concealed in
the heart of the Jewish people. So long as there is but one
spark glowing somewhere in their hearts, even though it
he so concealed that it might almost seem that the flame
is entirely extinguished, the call of the Shofar will bring
that spark into flame. And the remarkable results which
the call of the Shofar brings about is proof that the dor-
mant spirit of righteousness and goodness needs but a
slight breath of life for its reawakening.
The call of the Shofar challenges us to consider the
things which are higher than ourselves: whence do we
come and whither are we going, Who are we and to whom
must our allegiance be given, what we possess and what
is want ing, and what man bath of all his labor and vexa-
tion of his heart wherein he hath labored under the sun.
The individual has it as his duty to consider if he has done
his share in repairing the breaks in our spiritual life; what
he has done for sufferers in other lands and in the rebuild-
ing of Jerusalem, which the present extremely difficult
hour demands of us. and to consider whether his hands
are clean of false practices and dishonest dealings. And
if we are failing in any of these particulars, the holy com-
mandment of God for the blowing of the Shofar means to
warn us to alter our ways for the coming year.
This year, although we are not blowing the Shofar on
Saturday, we must take the spirit of the idea and live up to
it, rather than search for the material side of the trumpet
blowing.
The synagogue is not a receptacle for the refuse of your
past life. where, on Yom Kippur, you can deposit every-
thing which should be discarded in life. The synagogue
is not a place to leave sins and transgressions. The pur-
pose of the attendance at synagogue is to acquire the
spirtuality of Judaism and to take with you an understand-
ing of the laws of God, the ways of righteousness and good-
ness, an understanding of the commandments concerning
our relations of man to man and man to God. And when
we follow these commandments we can hope that God will
grant us and our people a happy and blessed New Year.

recently published by Rabbi Judah L. Levin.)

Invites you!
The Jewish race has taken a most exalted part in
civilization, and while there are Jews and Jews, the same
as there are Americans and Americans. a race is judged
by its contributions to the welfare of the world, and by
that standard the Jewish race stands high. Some of the
best and most reliable friends I have in the world are
Jews. and while I. as a public srevant, recognize no race.
creed, or color, I am glad to pay my tribute of praise to a
people who sought and established those great religious
concepts which have moulded and shaped the destinies of
the civilized world. The Jews are said to be a nation with-
oUt a country. They had a country once and that country
was the cradle of religion.
I am in hearty sympathy with every proper influence
which is being exerted to restore Palestine to the Jewish
race.

AN APPRECIATION
By SENATOR TRUMAN H. NEWBERRY
I eagerly accept the opportunity offered me to convey
through The Detroit Jewish Chronicle to the Jewish people
this greeting of good will and good wishes upon the Jewish
New Year which commences Sept. 22.
I am thankful to believe that my efforts in behalf of
many of the Jewish race who desire to rejoin their families
in this country have been successful. and I can, in this way;
show my deep appreciation of the support and encourage-
ment I have received from your people.
My sincere wishes for the happiest of New Years is
