And so, too, might it be said of
the spirit of Christianity. Though
we do nut believe in its dogmas,
though we have been the most per-
sistent opponents of some of its theo-
logical principles, yet we cannot but
appreciate the worth of its moral
teachings, and must therefore de-
plore the facts that these teachings
are honored by our Christian neigh-
bors more in the breach than in the
observance. The followers of Christ-
ianity generally are content to give
it but lip service. Unfortunately, too
often their attachment is of the sort
that discredits and dishonors. Who
can deny that were its spirit domi-
nant in the world today, even as the
number of its nominal followers ex-
tend over the earth and rule is poli-
tics and its finance, that the bloodiest
pages in history would recently not
have been written.

But our problem today is not with
Christianity, but with Judaism. With
us the situation is not greatly differ-
ent. The same indifference prevails.
We have acquired the habit of whin-
ing incessantly because we are mis-
understood and exaggerate the pin
pricks to which we are occasionally
subject as though the most important
thing in our lives for us to be liked
and petted. Too often do we he ar
the statement and are solaced by the
thought that collectively we are d e
cent as our neighbors. We listen
with too much satisfaction to what
may be perfectly true, that our vices
are no greater and no worse than
our neighbors': that if we make a god
of business, so do our neighbors; that
if we keep holy but one day a week
and profane the other six, so do our
neighbors; that if we at times neg
ect our obligations to our city, State
and country, so do our neighbors.
