WARSAW — At one of the late ses-
sions of the Polish Diet, Greenbaum
protested against continued insulting
remarks directed against the Jewish
deputies whenever they take the floor.
Even while Greenbaum was making
his speech, he was interrupted by rude
remarks like "Shut up, talk of onion
and garlic".and other insulting cries.
After Deputy Greenbanin's address,
the Diet proceeded calmly to the dis-
cussion of its current business and no
official action was taken in the matter
brought up by the Jewish deputy.
WARSAW—There has been discov-
ered here a factory of counterfeit

swindlers among prospective emi-
grants to the United States. The dis-
covery was made by officials of the

tain cemmereialisni about presents of
money that is slightly distasteful to
the giver. It is true that we will, and
should, give monetary tokens to the

little of their personal tastes, and
planning what to buy them would not
only be a waste of time, but might
have ludricrons results. It is because
of its commercial associations that we
hesitate to make .noiney gifts to our
respective wives, sons and daughters
on Christmas day. There is nothing
particularly individual about it, it sug-
gests no particular thought of the re-
cipient. The whole spirit of Christ-
mas giving is contained in the thought-
fulness behind the gift, and many . a
man who attempts lo dodge the re
sponsibility by merely writing out a
clutch or wrapping up some bills, or
turning smile funds OVVI- to his wife
with the injunction: "Buy yourself
and the youngsters something for
Christmas," feels distinctly out of har-
mony with the spirit of the (lay when
it arrives. The giving of gifts at holi-
day time will continue as long as the
world lasts. Every one of us, with
the exception of a disgruntled few,
likes to believe in Santa Claus, no
matter how elderly we may grow. It
id right that this should be so; the
Christmas spirit takes us out of our-
selves, and the presents we make are
intended as the limited outward ex-
pression of our boundless good feeling

sporadic societies being formed to sup-
press forever the practice of giving
presents at Christmas time. The only
important thing about them is the
titles they assume, and they usually
only last long enough to give the
slight notoriety which is sought per
sonally by the individuals who found
them. No one bothers enough over
them to write obituaries over their un-
timely ends. Such associations are
foredoomed because they are actuated
by meanness. Christmas will live for-
ever because its spirit is generosity
and good will. We must not forget
there is a meanness in giving as well
as in nbt giving,. like that of the little
boy who bought his tottering old
grandfather a boy's site bicycle for
Christmas. Give generously but give
wisely. Making gifts that encourage
the virtues of the recipient is the rule
to be guided by. It is an entirely dif-
ferent thing from the utilitarian idea,
the giving of purely useful gifts, which
is distasteful to many, as it is from
the extravagant idea, or giving un-
suitable gifts, which is wasteful. No
man really wishes to dodge his re-
sponsibilities in this respect.. Thou-
sands of them are probably racking
their brains at this moment to find
a solution to the problem, to whom
