the honor of addressing meetings of
notables in Jerusalem and Haifa and
of outlining the policy which the
Government intended lo pursue. It
would. I think. serve a useful purpose
if today I cwc to recall. point by
point, the deelarations then made, and
were to inform you of the progress
that has been effected during the
interval that has elapsed.
"NVith reference to the Northern
frontier of Pale•One, negotiations
have continued with the French Gov-
ernment, but are not yet completed.
From the towns and Wilms east of
the Jordan, I received during the
month of August many requests for
British assistance in the conduct of
the local administration, and I pro-
ceeded to Es-Salt on the 20th of
August, where, al a representative
meeting, I announced the measures
which the British Government seas
prepared to take. Subsequently, Brit-
ish officers have been stationed in
Ajlun, Salp, Armen and Kerald who
have promoted the formation of self-
governing bodies, and the establish-
ment of an efficient gendarmerie for
the maintenance of public security.
These measures have been taken with
the concurrence of the French Gov-
ernment and of the Damascus Ad-
ministration. I trust that the out-
come may be the establishment of
a greater degree of law and order,
and the protection Of trade and in-
dustry, which will not only benefit
the population of Trans-Jorulania, but

to stop at their source raids from the
