Parasites.
In the last issue of our paper we called attention to the canard
'that had appeared in a Catholic publication called "The Crisis" and
in which it was claimed that John Wilkes Booth, the murderer of
Lincoln, was a Jew. We protested against the spread of this tale
because it was obviously and provably a lie, and we expressed won-
der and regret that our friends of the Catholic faith in fighting
'bigotry should themselves resort to bigotry of this kind.
Since the appearance of the editorial in question, we have received
from Mr. John A. Russell, Chairman of the Educational Liberty
League, an association for the purpose of opposing the proposed
Anti-Parochial School Amendment, a communication, from which
weequote as follows:
"Every movement has its parasites, and ours is not without them.
'Early in this campaign, a , publication that Was,Very objectionable
'to myself and associates appeared, produced by a professional pub-
licity maker for movements of whatever kind. It was circulated by
some of our enthusiasts. Its tone was offensive, but I do not know
that it contained any variations front the truth. Later on, some
other enthusiasts were prevailed upon by this same publisher to buy
'The Crisis.' Although it bears the name of the Educational Liberty
League, it was without our authority. . . . Lucikly, out of one
hundred. thousand that were purchased by some of our overenthusi-
astic friends, a very small number got to the public. I was able to
discover who was distributinghem and directed the recall, although
I hesitated to take even that much responsibility for them.
"I agree with you thoroughly that whoever wrote the article, lied
about the religions faith of Booth, and, if Judaism had been his faith,
it would have been no more responsible for his action than if Inc had
been a R01111111 Catholic."
These words of Mr. Russell have the ring of that sincerity ar e
truth which all who know him are accustomed to associate with the
man. An the explanation which he gives is in every way satisfac-
tory. It is unfortunately true, as Mr. Russell says, that we all have
our parasites—persons who grow fat by feeding upon the weak-
nesses, the prejudices, and the partisanships of special groups and
classes. Of such undoubtedly arc those who are responsible for
"The Crisis" and the libel upon the good name of the Jew which it
contain«I.
That even with the limited circulation that it has received here.
it hasbad its deleterious effect istproved by the fact that a corre-
spondent in "The Voice of the People" column of one of our local
papers has already referred to the "fact" that the murderer of Lincoln
was a Jew. Thus libels spread. Of course, we regret that anyone
should have stooped so low as to spread a canard of this sort against
the Jew, but, for all that, we are deeply appreciative of the effort
which Mr. Russell and his colleagues in the Educational Liberty
League have made to counteract its vicious influence.

"I have never seen a greater con-
trast than that between the Jewish
colonists of Palestine and the Jewish
refugees fleeing from Central and
Eastern Europe; the latter in each
case almost trembling with fear—hum
gry, dejected;—the Palestinian knows
no fear, is free and happy.
"The Chaluzim (Pioneers) that I
saw, whether as they arrive at Jaffa,
or as they live at the "People's
House" at Tel Aviv, or as they work
on the roads built between Semach
and Tiberias and that along Yahmah,
are another evidence of the new kind
of Jew Palestine is developing. The
majority of them arc boys between
the ages of eighteen and twenty-t•o.

come from fine Notifies and who had
never before done hard physical labor.
Yet these erstwhile students, working

shovel were as happy a lot as I had
ever seen. Equally content and
happy seemed to be the few girls
who, with pick and shovel, were il-
lustrating that the Jewish female was,
not by any means, the weaker of the
species.
Students Come As Pioneers.
"Indeed, it is a very fine thing that
these thousands of Chaluzim are com-
ing to palestine. During the time I
was there, in one week 1,0$0 bad ar-
rived. These sturdy young men and
hardy young women will be greatly
needed, for Palestine is a pioneer
country and everything must lie built
up there. One .wonders how it was
possible for anyone to do as little as
the Turks did during the many cen-
turies of their blighted rule. The
whole country must be built up, and
as if it were decreed by fate Ameri-
can Jewry must play, if not the im-
portant, at least a most important,

clearly understood that without the
great financial sums, American Jewry
alone can supply, it will be impossible
to do the work l'alestine requires."
