The Fear of
Anti-Semitism.

Those who are students of Jewish
history and character, are at all
times conscious of the large part
played in them. by the fear of the
anti-semite and his machinations.
Throughout all time, the Jew has
been faced with the chicanery and
the malevolence of people who either
did not understand him, or who did
not wish to. Constantly beset with
suspicion, hate, misapprehension, or
downright wickedness, the Jew was
oftimes given to shape his acts and
thoughts with a view to the favorable
notice of the non-Jewish world.
Lomb yom'ru ha-goyim—what does
the gentile think? was a question
frequently asked by this or that Jew-
ish group. Do not demand this right;
or put your honest Jewish principle
in some other phrasing; or -concede
this insistent Jewish ideal — were
some of the ways in which the fear
of anti-sernitism deflected the true
current of Jewish thought.
To be sure, we should have no
apology for the mood, albeit we can
fully understand it. The position
was degrading to Jewish character
and idealism, and frequently occa-
sioned a just self-disrespect. The
right to live implies the right and
the duty to live out our own ideals
and principles without an apology to
any man, that is, of course, provided
those ideals and principles do not

The Essex Sedan

Economical—Easily Handled, Beautiful
and Comfortable— Compare its Price

Everyone now thinks of an enclosed car for
cool nights and the coming winter
But the objection to enclosed bodies
on light cars has been their restricted
performance.
The Essex has ample power to offset the
additional body weight.

Economical in Operation
and Maintenance

It is a compact, commodious car, with a
range of performance that answers every need.
Owners have used their Essex Sedans for long
tours. They know no limits to its service. It
answers every requirement of comfort and

beauty and it is economical as everyone ex-
pects a light car to be.
Gasoline, oil and tires are small items of ex-
pense in the operation of the Essex. But the
greatest saving is due to its reliability. Repair
and adjustment costs are negligible.
Much of the satisfaction in motoring comes
from the appearance of the car. It expresses
one's taste and individuality as much as one's .
clothes or the house in which one lives.
The Sedan is in every sense a family car,
of all seasons.
And its price is more than attractive in com-
parison with other Sedan types, regardless of
the more important question of performance
and durability.
