several movements toward this end
started in various Darts of the state.
"There is but slight possibility that
railroads can increase their transpor-
tation facilities sufficiently to meet
the public demand this Winter, " says
C. A. Triphagen, manager of the Rea
Detroit Branch.
"In consequence the necessity of
keeping the highways open for au-
tomobile traffic, both by truck and
passenger car, is apparent. Recur-
rence of snows such as blocked the
roads for weeks last winter would
cause a critical condition in the econ-
omical and industrial world. The
State Highway Commission is thor-
oughly awake to the necessity of
snow removal, but it most have the
co-operation of the county and town
officials throughout the state. It is
agreed that spending millions of dol-
lars for splendid highways, and then
allowing them to be unused for at
least three months out of the year is
poor business policy. The cost of
snow removal is regarded as insig-
nificant as compared with the benefits
that will accrue front having open
roads."

"A properly made automobile stor-
age battery will give good service
either in the tropics or the Polar re-
gions if accorded a little attention,"
says N1. J. Burns, 43-45 Brady street,
USL Service Station representative
for this district. In calling attention
to the carelessness of the average mo-
torist with the battery on his car he
adds:
"\l any car owners habitually pass
up the service station, preferring to
wait until something goes radically
wrong with the storage battery. This
is not the best policy to follow be-
cause, in many cases, the battery is
liable to go out of commission while
tht car is touring afar in the country.
"My experience as a USL Service
man is that the great majority of
automobile owners are profoundly
careless with their batteries. They do
not even know what's inside them.
Their knowledge begins with keeping
the plates covered by adding distilled
water and ends with that. They
haven't much more than a casual
knowledge of the battery plates. How
the plates .cork and how they are af-
fected for good or ill by conditions
existing not only inside the battery
but also at outside points in the elec-
trical system are things in which own-
ers could profitably interest them-

CHARACTER CARS

SIXES AND TWELVES

a. L.

E,ery motorist knows what it
means to run any considerable dis-
tance on low gear knows that if
there ever is a time when his engine
is liable to overheat and cause him
trouble, that is the time. Therefore,
It is interesting to note the low gear
run made by Walter Biddle, of To-
ledo, recently. Biddle used a stock
Franklin touring car for the test,
driving 100 miles in low gear at an
average speed of 11.62 miles per hour.
The trip was made from Toledo
through Sylvania, Blisslield, Adrian,
Hudson, Hillsdale and return to with-
in 15 miles of Adrian before the
speedometer registered the required
1110 miles. The motor was not stop-
ped during eight hours and 29 min-
utes and showed no signs of over-
heating. When 100 tniles was reach-
ed, the car was put into high gear
and driven back at high speed to To-
ledo, a distance of 50 miles, without
giving the motor a chance to cool off.
No adjustments of any kind were
made on the entire trip. and the car
finished in perfect condition, accord-
ing to Sylvan J. Snyder, chief statis-
tician of the Toledo Blade, who rode
with Biddle to observe the car's per-
formance.

Intelligent Battery Service
Requires Modern
Equipment.

The up-to-date service station is a
far more thoroughly equipped institu-
tion than its predecessor of a few
years ago, according to W, J. Burns,
general manager USL Service Station
representative for this district.
"The progressive improvement of
the automobile," he stated yesterday,
"has liven accompanied by remark-
able improvements in the storage hat•
eery service station. Where a few
y ears back it had but few mechanical
appliances with which to hasten re-
pair work the situation is different to-
day.
"Take the average USL Service
Station for illustration. It is equipped
with every known mechanical device
for not only turning out perfect re-
pair work, but getting this work out
in a minimum of time. Time is the
important factor with the motorist.
The punctual service station is the
one that will get the business nowa-
days. Knowing the truth of this ad-
age all service stations are today
competing with one another by work-
ing against time on every battery job.
"Experience tells me that the aver-
age motorist is beginning to 'bone up'
on his storage battery. Ile is real-
izing that the little black box on his
car. which has been a mystery to him,
is not a perpetual generator of elec-
trical energy. but a device which will
soon go into a fit of tantrums unless
given some slight attention now and
then.
"He is also beginning to under-
stand the nature of his battery plates
—the difference between an up-to-
date machine-pasted plate and the
old style hand-pasted variety."

"Battery-enlightenment is what the
automobile owning public is in need
of at the persent time. They fully un-
derstand their engines. Theft why
should they not understand their bat-
terries? Both are of vital importance
to the car and are more inter-related
than any other accessory except the
four wheels.

BISHOP McINNES OF
JERUSALEM REFUTES
PALESTINIAN RABBI

AUTOMOBILE DIRECTORY

Churchman Denies That Zionism Is
Growing Stronger Among
Orthodox Jewry.

LONDON.—Replying to the re-
marks made by Bishop McInnes of
Jerusalem, that opposition to Zionism
seas growing stronger among ortho-
dox Jews, Rabbi A. Kook, the leading
representative of all orthodox Jews in
Palestine, sent the following reply to
the "Palestine weekly" which is re-
printed in the last issue of the "Near
East:"
"NVe feel it our duty publicly to
refute the statement of the Bishop
concerning the increasing opposition
among orthodox Jews to Zionism,
specially during the last eighteen
months. It is difficult to state from
what source the Bishop obtained this
unfounded information. We can all
testify that, precisely during the last
months, the recognition has been
growing stronger among the extreme
orthodox that Zionism was a move-
ment guided from above to realize
the vision of the prophets of the
redemption of Israel and the deliver-
ance of humanity. 1 1.ereby beg to
inform the public that the orthodox
feel that, with the growing of the
National renaissance, piety and deep
faith are increasing in all our ranks,
and the feelings of brotherhood and
internal unity are becoming more in-
tense. There is no room for quarrels
between or suspicion in our ranks.
With regard to the false accusation
that this new immigrants—Russian,
Polish and Roumanian Jews who
have escaped from the menacing
sword—are all Bolsheviki in princi-
ple, there is no need to reply. It is
a recognized truth, however, that all
the immigrants who choose Palestine
as their home are imbued with nation-
al and religious feelings which differ
essentially from Bolshevik teachings.
As 3 responsible person, the Bishop
should announce publicly that his in-
formation was derived from an un-
reliable source."
The remarks referred to were made
by the Bishop of Jerusalem at the
annual meeting of the English Mis-
sion.

ANTI SEMITIC FLATTERY

-

LONDON—In the last of a series of
anti-Semitic articles, under the head
of Co-Masonry and Revolution, the
"Morning Post" has the following
concluding paragraph:
"Now, of all Orientals, the Jew is
by far most vigorous in intellect and
the most tenacious of purpose. In-
deed, on the average his intellectual
and moral tenacity are greater than
are the European's. It is natural,
therefore, that he should take the lead
over other Asiatic peoples in the Ori-
ental war against the West."
