The Polish Pronouncement of Principles
The recent demonstrations held in our community by resident
Poles of the city in behalf of the movement to obtain the moral and
material aid of the United States for Poland in its hour of dire distress
brought forth what to us was a startling thing. After making appeals
to the Polish citizens who had gathered at the meeting to contribute
liberally toward the purchasing of Polish bonds, the speakers submitted
resolutions in which we found the following words:
"We announce to the Republic of Poland in its hour of agony
and distress our sincere sympathy and our heartfelt support to the
end that the Republic of Poland may once more stand forth as the
victor for civilization and democracy against the di orders of the
East."
We repeat that those words "Victor for civilization and democracy"
occasioned us overwhelming surprise. We were astonished to learn
after our bitter knowledge of Poland's history that she had ever
championed the cause of civilization or had even been a supporter of
democratic ideals.
Would that Poland could rightfully claim these fundamentals as
the cornerstone of her kingdom, but alas, untold massacres, indescribable
pogroms, streets running red with human blood, brutalities which
beggar description, all belie the claims of her champions—that she is a
victor of civilization. Either we must, deny the claim of her spokesmen
that she is a victor of civilization and a supporter of democracy, or we
must hang our heads in shame at the thought that her acts of iniquity
and perfidy are evidences of civilization and of democracy. Civilization
must be a poor thing indeed if Poland, through her history, has been
representative of it. The Polish pronouncement of principles is as far
fetched as it is untenable and unhistorical.
In the name of humanity we hope that in the event Poland should
survive the attacks of her kinsmen, the Bolshevists, that she will be
shamed into following the high standard enunciated by those who wish
her well in this land. A happy time indeed will it be for millions of
Jews when Poland justifies herself to be called a victor for civilization
and a supporter of democracy.
Poison Political Propaganda
The mud-slinging has begun. The Presidential campaign is merrily
on its way and, as usual, the Jew is the goat. Throughout the land
ward-healers and small politicians of ill-repute have begun to fan into
flame the smouldering spark of prejudice and bigotry. There have been
whisperings that the Jew and the Catholic are united to down the
Protestants in the United States and to assume complete control of the
government. If such charges were not so tragic in their intent—were
they not so maliciously conceived, we could pass them tip with utmost
scorn, nay, we could laugh at them heartily for they call forth only
contempt and ridicule. But alas, there are too many who give credence
to such statements, who, because they have in their hearts almost at
birth a prejudice against them. \Ve do not believe that the men who
lead the great parties in America will themselves countenance such
malicious and ridiculous charges. We must do everything in our power
to show them that the Jews participate in the elections of our country
only as individuals—never as a group.
The vipers in our political parties must be taught by the righteous
element of our citizenry that this debasing political propaganda can find
no enduring place in American life. It is time that our politics be
cleansed of its venom and that men be chosen to lead the people who
shall stand out as conscientious protestors against any attempt to turn
brother citizen against brother.
Fighting Fanaticism
The fanatics still rage. Insupportable accusations are made against
the Jew ever and anon. Alen who are on the borderland of lunacy still
find publishers who will print their effusions. We will always have
those conditions of fanaticism existing both on the part of individuals
and governments. For Israel is the mighty protesting power ever
denouncing the maintainers of unfair conditions and for such opposition
the world has never displayed gentleness or tolerance. We say this in
spite of all the fine praises suggested by a dominant religion w h ich
vociferously claims to instill love into the hearts of torn. The struggles
in the peaceful warfare for human rights and liberties, however, will
ever have God on their side though man—though legions of men be
arrayed against them. \Ve know better than our opponents can under-
stand that they who fight for man with God on their side may sometimes
be defeated—vanquished, conquered, they can never be.
To teach this truth to the world Israel must dedicate itself. Ilappily
we have taken steps to inform the non. *wish world of Israel's true self
by the: establishment of Chautauqua Iel a courses and other intellectual
means. Fortunate indeed it is that we are reaching out to the great
Sources of knowledge, to the universities and colleges of our land
Supplying them with representative men capable of telling the wondrous
accomplishments 0 Israel and its great contribution to civilization. The
most effective method of combating and fighting fanaticism is by
44:1UCatiOnal means. Let us encourage the Chautauqua and let us render
our unstinted support to' those organizations which seek to bring
through lectures the truth to the non-Jewish world.
Open the Door to the Immigrant
Not much has been said in recent days about immigration. It seems
that everyone is fearful of tackling the problem. We have not yet
learned that the war is over. We still think in v ar terins and we still
have our old war hatreds, and because of this the doors of America,
which were securely locked at the first blast of the bugle, still remain
bolted against most immigrant classes.
We are not denying the fact that it is absolutely necessary to
restrict immigration to an extent and to exclude from our shores men
and women who because of despised political doctrines might be the
spreaders of evil disease in our own land, but there are hundreds of
thousands of deserving men and women from all lands of the world
knocking at our doors every day for admittance. These deserving
immigrants are told before they come, or after they get here that they
are not wanted. This means that they are once again condemned to live
M lands from which they would escape. This is especially true of those
who would come to us from Poland, Hungary, Roumania and Russia.
In the meantime there arises in America a lamenting cry for labor
of every kind. Unskilled men and women are needed by the tens of
thousands and yet, though we know what the immigrant has meant in
the history of America's up-building, see still exclude them. It is time
that we should declare the war at an end—that we should open our
gates wide with the land of liberty beckoning with hospitable hand to
all those desirable aliens who wish to come. Open your gates, America.
The immigrant needs you. You need the immigrant.

I can testify to this from my own
