and land, to the Restoration Fund, says a cable report from the Zionist
Commission. Newspaper editorials point out that the Jews of Palestine con-
tributed more in proportion to their wealth and numbers than any other
country.

Banking••An Important
Part of Your Business

Business men seldom stop to

think of the accommodation

and service rendered them by a

bank—how dependent their

business is upon such service.

Has Is occurred to you that this bank helps finance
and maintain the Detroit Clearing House for the
interchange of your customers' cheeks on other
banks? Do you realize what a vast amount of de-
tail work this service alone saves your business?
Yet this is only one of our many service features
which you have come to take simply as a matter
of course.

The Joint Distribution Committee has received a cable from Mr. Julius
Goldman, its European director, intimating that Mr. Max Pine, of New
York, and Judge Harry Fisher, of Chicago, both of whom were in the relief
service of the J. D. C. for the past six months, will leave Revel for the
continent, whence they will sail for America. These two representatives
of the J. D. C. are mainly responsible for all arrangements made for Jewish
relief distribution in Soviet Russia.

In the British House of Commons, Brigadier-General Colvin askia Mr.
Churchill, the Secretary of State for War, whether Mr. Jahotinsky, who did
service for his country during the war, was marched to jail in company with
Arabs who were sentenced for violating Jewish girls, and whether he is still
confined in the jail at Acre. Mr. Churchill in reply said: "According to the
latest information in my possession, Mr. Jabotinsky is still confined at Acre.
I will inquire of Lord Allenby the exact conditions of his imprisonment."

BERLIN—The local Independent Socialist party has adopted a resolu-
tion to the effect that its candidates for political office may not belong to
any religious group. By adopting this new attitude the Independent Social-
ists have discarded the old rule that religion is a private affair of the indi-
vidual, and must not be held against him. It is interesting to note that
among the founders of the Independent Socialist party were Hugo Haase
and Emanuel Warm, avowed Jews; Dr. Cohn is even a Poale-Zionist; Eich-
horn, the chief of police of Berlin, is a Jew; and Mrs. Hubler and Mrs. Zietz,
both descendants of Jews and leaders in the party, were Evangelists.

Herr von Oppeln•Bronilovski, a member of the
Conservative Party of
!Germany, who lays claims to being something of a politician, has just pub-
lished a booklet about anti-Semitism, in which he expresses himself in a way
will not be at all pleasing to his colleagues. He says: "The Jews are
escribed
! d
!described by the anti-Semites as 'guests' in Germany. The truth is that
hosts have a duty towards their guests and that if the hosts do not behave
I properly it must be expected that the guests will do the
same. If the host
is liberal, the guest is in honor bound to repay like with like, and before long
he will show that he desires to remain not merely a 'guest.'" In another
passage in the same book the writer declares, and he ought to know, that the
hatred of the Jews is due for the most part to commercial jealousy. It is
not so much idealistic motives which actuate the anti-Semites as the anger of
the less skillful trader. Those who
are loudest in their denunciation of Jews
should in justice also remember the achievements of Jews. For one thing,
Jews have contributed their fair quota to art and science. If science and art
had to depend in Germany on the parties of the Right, there would be hardly
any artists and scientists in existence.

Jews showed themselves the best potato growers in Palestine by win-
ning all the prizes in the recent Agricultural Exhibit at Haifa. ,They also
won all the prizes for lentils and beans, and they had the best industrial
exhibit at the show. Although the first prize for barley was awarded to a
Jew, the Arabs carried away the second and third, and all the prizes for
wheat. A small motor cultivator, which was on view, created quite a sensa-
tion.

VILNA.—The Jewish institutions of Vilna are in danger of being closed
upon account of all acute lack of funds. Because of the war conditions and
the persecutions by the Poles, the Jews of the city are too impoverished to
be able to support their institutions. The Kehillah is trying its utmost to
raise funds and may appeal to the Vilna Jews in America for support.
