the rabbi's pipe is not a help? And
the holiday pipe, too!
Before Haim Baruch had thne to
get off the wagon he was besieged by
a huge crowd who clamored for the
loan of the pipe. They begged to
have it for a month, or only for
week , or a day, an hour, a minute,
or a second. They offered consider-
able sums of money for a mere look
at it. Haim Baruch's answer to one
and all was:
"Ask Sarah Rebecca!"
His capable wife put the matter on
a business basis. It cost eighteen
cents to have a single inhalation of
tobacco smoke out of the rabbi's holi-
day pipe. The pipe proved to be
peculiarly effective for all sorts of ills
and Sarah Rebecca did a thriving busi-
ness. She soon bought a house and
opened a store. She put away her
glasses and bought new underwear
for her erudite husband. Atter a shor,
time the Gentile mayor of the town
was taken ill, and he sent for Sarah
Rebecca and the pipe and paid her
three dollars for smoking it. This in-
cident had the effect of still further
e nhancing the pipe's reputation.

However, a
few months passed and
Haim Baruch perceived no change.
On the night succeeding Rosh Has-
honah there was. as usual, a great
crowd of Hasidim in the rabbi's
synagogue. The rabbi abruptly ap-
proached Haim Baruch. tapped him
on the shoulder, and said:
"Haim Baruch, what do you lack?"
"Nothing." he replied, taken aback.
"Y
Untrue !" cr i e d the rabbi ou
lack something, and I'll tell you what
it is. You lack a pipe of tobacco!" •
The congregation stood amazed,
but the rabbi continued: "You smoke
cigarettes like an expressman."
Haim Baruch faltered out. "I'll tell
Sarah Rebecca."
"Tell her," proceeded the rabbi,
"and let her buy you a big, decent
looking pipe. Take along my h&j-
day pipe for a pattern and let her
get you one just like it."
That was the beginning of Hiram
Baruch's good fortune. When he re-
turned to his home town he found
that the report had preceded him that
he was bringing the rabbi's pipe.
Everybody spoke about it and every-
body was vitally interested in it. It
was the popular opinion that, inas-
much as Haim Baruch was childless,
the pipe was obviously a remedy for
barrenness. Some added that the pipe
was an infallible core for all stomach
troubles, and others asserted that the
pipe was also intended to cure Sarah
Rebeccah's ailing eyes, and that it
was a sure cure for eye trouble. Truly,
can any ill be conceived for which
