The Conference Social Service Program.

Offices, 1334 Book Building

The Social Service Program adopted by the Central Conference
of American Rabbis at its meeting in Rochester, has received much
comment, favorable and otherwise. There arc those who criticise
the utterances of the Conference on the grounds that ministers
should have no concern with affairs outside of the immediate prob-
lems of the church. Such critics would have their ministers devote
their time tri metaphysical speculation and to preaching a meaning-
less, platitudinous doctrine of dogmatized faith. To men and women,
however, who view the Synagog and Church with veneration and
who look upon religion as the all-essential weapon in fighting the
battles of life, the Conference Program is significant indeed. The
Rabbis felt it their rightful duty to state their attitude toward the
social and economic problems that have ethical implications in order
that adherents of Judaism may have "guidance in the fashioning of
their standards of action" and that "the general citizenship may be
influenced in the solution of the vexing problems that beset the
public h."
The problems dealt with by the Conference Commission are
vital to our life today. The Platform itself is both dignified, com-
prehensive and workable. It is to be hoped that the Program which
advocates Democracy in Industry, the Eight Hour Day, Abolition
of Child Labor, Freedom of Speech and Assembly, Elimination of
Profiteering and the Enactment of a Federal Lynch Law, shall be
come a part of every person's thought, that these enunciated prin-
ciples may be brought into actual, living being.

To Henry Ford's title "Flivver King" may be added "Em-
peror of the Anti-Semites." He has justly earned it. We concede

it to him. Past history will not dispute our claim that he deserves
the appellation. The articles recently carried in Mr. Ford's "personal
