"'HE DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE
What Is
A Jew?'
—.-
By Myer S. Fink.
The following address was deliv-
ered under the auspices of the Intel-
lectual Advancement Committee of
Pisgah Lodge No. 34, 1. 0. B. B., at
the regular meeting Monday, May 31:
Frederick the Great, in making
Prussia a great military power, com-
mented in his history of the "Rise
of States" in the following words:
"No nation has ever prospered that
has ever persecuted the Jews."
The first great nation that ever per-
secuted the Jews was Egypt. Egypt
has perished as a nation, but the Jew
still exists. Next came the ChaIdeans,
the Assyrians, and the Babylonians.
These three powerful nations in their
time ruled Asia, Africa and most of
Europe. They have disappeared en-
tirely. Next came the Greeks. They,
too, persecuted the Jews and they,
too, have disappeared. Then Rome
arose and Rome is no More. Then
came the Spaniards and Portuguese.
When Napoleon sent his army into
Spain and Portugal with the intent
to end their existence, as nations, in
order to annex them to France, Eng-
land sent in Sir Arthur Wellesley

Solomon built the most
magnificent temple, palaces for him-

princes. He had to have laborers to
accomplish this, to which end Ile
drafted one hundred and twenty
thousand Jews to do the work. For
the first time an aristocracy was es-
, tablished, dividing the Jews into two
camps.
The unnatural condition continued
while he lived. Ile no more than
closed his eyes when the entire
fabric went to pieces. The Jews were
divided into two camps,—the King-
dom of Israel and the Kingdom of
Judah. There was continual fighting.
King after King was assasinated.
Then came the fall of the Jews as a
nation. First the Kingdom of the
Ten Tribes, then the Kingdom of
Judah. Again a Jewish scholar saved
them. Ezra, the Scribe, led the Jews
bac to Palestine, and re-established
the laws of Moses. They lived hap-
pily until they began to mix with the
Hellenes and the Greeks: Dissention
arose between them. Then came the
family of Hasmondians to save them.
And while they saved the Jewish
state, they, too, planted seeds of
destruction. The Hasmoneans estab-
I:shed a Kingdom in the state, an un-
Jewish institution. Dissention arose
again. They called in ten Romans to
interfere in their affairs, and they
: destroyed them. That was the final
end of the Jewish state.
Again a Jewish scholar arose-

Titus, the conquerer of Judaism a
single favor—that he furnish him the
means to establish a Je•isit school.
Jocham Ben Zachi did not belive in
a Jewish state. He held the Jews
were the teachers of the world. Now
opportunity is again given to the Jews
to establish themselves in Palestine,
to live up to the old laws of Moses.
Now is our opportunity to answer
the question, "What is a Jew?"
