Million Dollar Company

The national advertising and sales
campaign opened by the Curran-Detroit
Radiator Cu., the first of this year, has
resulted in such a heavy demand for
the famous radiator, that the company
has increased its capitalization to $1,-
000.100), remaining a 'Michigan corpora-
tion.
Jobbers and exporters are asking for
the special Ford type radiator in car-
load lots. The increasing popularity is
due to three distinct advantages, name-
ly, overheating impossible, freezing en-
tirely harmless and overcooling pre-
vented. These patented features, includ-
ing a simple water thermostatic circu-
lation control, have resulted in an all
season radiator, long demanded by our

Gross earnings for the Rock Island
are running 30% greater than a year
ago. To care for this increased busi-
ness and for maturing issues, it Is un-
derstood that some $20,000,000 In
bonds will be sold. Approximately
$13,000,000 of it will be fur new money
to be spent on rolling stock and road-
way to handle the very profitable busi-
ness which Is materializing from the
development of the Southwestern ter-
ritory. This additional issue would in-
crease interest charges less than 10%
and Is expected to open up new sourc-
es of revenue and to increase operat.
Mg efficiency on present business to
an extent such that net earnings will
increase more than the amount of the
additional interest. Based on lain
year's figures, Rock Island with a 25%
freight rate increase 'would show net
operating income and dividends of
$25,000,000. After deducting interest
charges, including those on the pro-
posed issue, and dividing with the
Government any excess over 6% on
the property valuation, there would
still remain net equivalent to $10 a
share on the common stock. Even

"It might be assumed that this ex-
pression referred to that friendly strug-
gle for the car's use which occurs so
frequently between the younger mem-
bers of the family.
"But the 'family quarrel' I have in
mind occurs between members of the
I I immobile owner family—and there
are as many factions as there are Hup-
mobile models—each faction firm in the
belief that they own the best Iltipmo-
bile ever produced.
"It is exceedingly interesting for me
to note the arguments caused by intro-
ducing Series R owners to possessors
of other Hupmobiles. There seems to
Le a peculiarity common to all Him-
mobile owners—each man thinks that his
model is the best model ever built, and
that his particular car is the best car of
that model. This has been so from the
very beginning. There arc any number
of people in the country who are still
driving the old odd 20, the first Hop-
mobile. and insisting that virtue de-
parted from the automobile industry
with the passing of that model.
"What can a dealer do in the face
of such loyalty but let the owner go
ahead and drive their cars until they
are stolen or get smashed up by an
express train? After this happens, they
usually buy the current model and im-
mediately start all over again and be-
come hopelessly prejudiced in the new
car's favor.
"I have argued with many a religions
and political fanatic, but for downright
resourcefulness and stubbornness, they
can't hold a candle to the average
mobile owner."
