In 1914 the famous Paris dressmakers closed their ateliers and exchanged their
fantastic studio garb for the uniform of the French Army. For a century the
United States had depended on Paris for styles. Should waist lines be high or low?
Should sleeves he short or long, tight or flowing - , large or small? Should skirts just
clear the pave or reveal the curve of calf ? Should stockings be the thinnest silk or
the roughest wool.? Should there he any stockings at all? Paris answered these
questions that the world asked, and there was no appeal from that decision.

pass !“ Deprived of Parisian advice. American costume creators were bewil-
dered. Then slowly they gathered their resources and their wit. The creation
