POLISH LEADER STATES
JEWS SHOULD BE REC-
OGNIZED AS MINORITY

London—At a sitting of the For-
eign Commission of the Polish Par-
liament, Daszynski, the leader of the
Polish socialists, expressed the opin-
ion that the existence of a special
Jewish minority should be recognized.
and an agreement with this minority
should be sought after. The Right
parties in Poland have always ex-
pounded the view that the Jews are
to be destroyed, and their attitude
was the cause of the Minority clauses
of the Peace Treaty, which are a les-
son for these circles. The Socialists
tried to oppose these clauses, but
they are forted to admit that they
are the direct result of the persecu-
tMns of the Right parties. These
statements are particularly remark-
able as Mr. Daszyuski has always
been one of the warmest advocates
of Jewish assimilation.

man dyestuff manufacturies, has also
decided to double its working capi•
tal, in order to develop further the
process of extracting nitrogen from
the air. The importation of Chili
saltpetre—at present amounting to
between two and two and a half bil-
lions of marks annually would then
be decreased; a great gain in the fer-
tility of the land and consequently in
the crop production would result,and
finally, nitrogen to the value'of many
hundreds of millions of marks could
be exported. The work in connec-
tion with the nitrogen extraction has
outstripped that on the calcareous
substance. The latter is extracted
from calcium carbid. The discoveries
of Grunstein relating to alcohol and
acetic acid remain to be workeitout
further.

PLEDGE $150,000 TO AID
EUROPEAN B'NAI BRITH

Atlantic City, N. J.—A. B. Seelen-
ferund, of Chicago, secretary of the
Constitutional Grand Lodge B'nai
B'rith, made a plea for financial assist-
ance for the Jews of Poland and the
Balkans at the opening session here
today of the biennial convention of
the Grand Lodge of the B'nai Brith
of the Third District.
Mr. Seelenfreund declared that con-
ditions among the Jewish people in
some of the countries could not be
worse. He said the B'nai B'rith in
America expected to make a loan of
about $150,000 to the Ithai B'rith in
Europe to assist in relieving distress,
and that the order in the Third Dis-
trict, which comprises New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, Delaware and West
Virginia, was expected to contribute
about $50,000 of this amount.
The annual gold medal award by
Ile order to the man who, in the opin-
ion of the Grand Lodge, rendered the
most conspicuous service to the Jew-
ish race during the year, was present-
ed tonight to Simon Wolf, of Wash-
ington, founder of the Simon Wolf

JEWISH INVENTIVE
GENIUS TO REBUILD
GERMANY'S TRADE

Berlin.—The "Frankfurt Zeitung,"
in an article entitled "Hopeful De-
velopments in an Unhopeful Period,"
shows how Germany, by the proper
utilization of three discoveries re-
cently made in her midst, can find a
way out of her desperate economic
plight. These discoveries are the ex-
traction of nitrogen, according to
flaber, of a calcareous (lime) mat-
ter, as developed by Caro, and of
alcohol and acetic acid, as worked
out by Grunstein.
The huge aniline concern, created
by the consolidation of the great Ger-

Gerinany in time of peace con-
sumes 2 3-4 millions of tons of pota-
toes for alcohol manufacture, and
the application of Grunstein's
discov-
ery would do away with the necessity
of using potatoes for this purpose.
Haber, Caro and Grunstein are
Jews. Fritz Haber, who was born in
Breslau in 1868, is Director of the
Physiological-Chemical Institute of
the Kaiser Wilhelm Society. Nathan
Grunstein, a graduate engineer, has
lived for years in Frankfurt, and is a
member of the executive committee
of the local Zionist organization.
