And so tonight, my friends, I feel
that the message of upward aspiration 11111
comes to us. Let us no more be lik
content to live our lives like the
groveling brute upon the lowest plane 111 1
that is possible to us, feeding our I II

physical appetites and neglecting the
cravings of that spiritual nature with lk
which God has endowed us, but let 1
us be children of God indeed, worthy
of the knowledge that in His image
we were made, and aspiring to be
like Him in holiness and in perfec-
tion. The pact may have been cruel
to you or to me; not one among us
all but can point to shattered hopes
and unsatisfied ambitions, but what
of that? For every disappointed hope,
surely somewhere in our life there
must have been some glad surprise
of happiness, some bird song that we
had not dared to dream of seeing.
If we have not heard the song or seen
the star, it may be that it was be-
cause we closed our eye or dulled our
ear or looked for happiness where it
was not. Within ourselves, and not
out yonder in the world, lies peace.
In the cleanness of our lives, in the
integrity of our motives, in the serv-
ice that we render to our fellowmen,
in the ideals that impel us, is the
golden goals that lure us on, in these
must lie our happiness, and not in the
vapid pleasures of the moment or in
the temptations that allure only in
the end to disappoint us with their
emptiness.
The great Russian Tolstoi, how-
ever, in one regard or another he may
have erred in his practical philosophy,
lid seem to understand the secret of
happiness, and on a night like this
his "Pilgrim's Song" may come to us
with meaning:
"My blessing fall on this fair world.
I M the mountain, valley, forest, ocean,
The clairon winds in ceaseless motion,
And heaven's blue banner high un-
furled.

"Oh I might I in my exultation
To all the world this joy impart!
Would I might clasp this whole crea-
tion,
Lovers, or strangers, foes or brothers.
With fervent rapture to my heart!"
He who can sing a song like this
has reached the heights and sounded
the. depths of that peace which is
supreme. May it be yours and mine,
my brothers, through the coming
year, through the inspiration of faith,
through the strength that comes from
an abiding hope, and through the
spiritual energy derived from a right
aspiration, also to touch the height
and depth of a peace that is supreme
and to know that holy joy that comes
from truth to self and loyalty and
service to our fellow men. Amen.
