Mrs. Henry Morgenthau Is Honored By
French Government
Wife of Former Ambassador Receives Decoration of
Legion of Honor for Hospital Work in Turkey
The French minister of foreign af-
fairs on Saturday bestowed the deco-
ration of the Legion of Honor upon
Mrs. Henry Morgenthau, the wife of
the former American ambassador to
Turkey, in recognition of the work
she did at the French hospital at Con-
stantinople in the early part of the
war, says a cablegram from Paris,
dated Sept. 2. In decorating Mrs.
Morgenthau the minister thanked her
in the name of tln4 French govern-
ment for her labors ,in behalf of the
French wounded and sick, saying it
was largely due to her efforts that the
French . hospital in Constantinople
had been able to accomplish the
work it had done and was continuing
to do.
Mr. and Mrs. Morgenthau plan to
sail for the United States on the first
steamship on which they can obtain
suitable accommodations.
Mrs. Henry Morgenthau left the
United States on June 21, 1917, with
her husband, who was head of the
mission sent to Egypt to investigate
the condition of the Jews in Pales-
tine. She has always been very much
interested in the work of the Red
Cross, and has been actively identified
since the outbreak of the war with
many hospital interests in Turkey.
When Mrs. Morgenthau returned
to the United States on October 14,
1915, she had done much toward or-
ganizing hospital work in Turkey. At
that time she spoke of the work being
done by the French hospital at Pera,
which was taken over from the nuns
and equipped with 250 beds. In addi-
tion to aiding this hospital Mrs. Mor-
genthau did a great deal toward in-
creasing the facilities of the Red
Cross hospital there, which at that
time had accommodations for 700 in-
jured. She spent a great deal of her
time i n this hospital looking after the
wounded.
Miss Susan Brandeis, daughter of
Justice Louis D. Brandeis of the Unit-
ed States supreme court, was one of
the principal speakers at the joint Y.
M. and Y. W. H. A. convention at
Faneuil Hall, Boston, Mass., last Sun-
day morning.

New York.—Sarah Bernhardt re-
sumed her last tour of America and

peares "Merchant of Venice" and that
of Jane De Mauduit in "L'Etoile dans
la Nuit" ("The Star in the Night"), a
one-act play based on the war.
Mine. Bernhardt appeared as the
youthful sweetheart and inspiration of
a poet-soldier who had been blinded
by liquid fire.
The performance ended in an out-
burst of. patriotism, the orchestra
playing the "Marseillaise" and the
"Star-Spangled Banner" amid great
cheering.
