HELEN H. MORRIS
The many local friends of Miss Helen
I lenschel Morris will be delighted to
learn of the splendid recognition ac-
corded her in musical circles in New
York, where she has been studying the
past five years as a pupil of Leopold Go-
dowsky and Mme. Lichtman. She re-
cently gave a private recital before an
audience of musical critics and students
and received a most encouraging ovation
for her remarkable rendition of a se-
lection of most difficult compositions.
"Musical America" and "Musical Cour-
ier," two of the most prominent musi-
cal journals in America, unite in praise
of her performance and said by way of
comment: "The performance of Miss
Morris was that of an intelligent and
conscientious young artist. She has ex-
cellent technique, a style and phrasing
that show musicianship and intelligence,
and her tone is one of brilliancy and
proper shading. Miss Morris should
be heard from more frequently in the
near future."
Miss Morris is the (laughter of Mr.
and Mrs. B. G. Morris of Pilgrim Ave.
She is very well known in Detroit among
the younger set, having graduated from
the Detroit Central High School a few
years ago. It was her intention to
continue her musical study in Europe
after leaving Detroit, but the outbreak
of the war prevented the trip. The
talented young pianist may soon visit
her 'home and give a recital in this
city.
YOUNG JEWISH GIRL EM-
BARKS ON BUSINESS
CAREER.
It has been a fact for many years
in Jewish homes, that the girls have
been, given splendid literary educa-
tions, and are well taught in all mat-
ters of domesticity, not . to overlook
the culinary abilities, but very little
thought has been given the commer-
cial aptness of Jewish women; yet
San Francisco.—Woodrow Wilson
Sperling is perhaps the only San
Francisco boy to receive the personal
well wishes of President Wilson.
He is a mouth old, and is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sperling. Mr.
Sperling is a past grand president of
District Grand Lodge No. 4, Inde-
pendent Order B'nai B'rith, and a well
known communal worker.
Soon after the baby's birth, his
proud parents sent a telegram to the
White House advising President Wil-
son that the boy had been named for
him. In reply, the parents have re-
ceived this message:
"Mr. Frank Sperling.
"My Dear Sir:
"The president asks me to thank
you and Mrs. Sperling for your tele-
gram and for your generous expres-
sions of approbation. He deeply ap-
preciates the compliment which you
have paid him in the naming of your
baby and he hopes that the little man
will be richly blessed with health and
happiness.
"Sincerely yours,
"J. P. TUMULTY,
"Secretary to the President."
let it be known this has not prevent-
ed the progress along these lines of
some who have found their own voca-
tions, and are successful in hteir un-
dertakings.
Among our enterprising young
women, permit us to mention Miss
Layetta Robinson and Mrs. Floyd
Rindstaff, who have presented to the
public a most alluring blouse shop on
the third floor of the Peter Smith
building. No efforts have been spared
to give a valued selection of fashion-
able creations, and their charming per-
sonalities are helpmates in their
achievement.
The Jewish community in Berlin has
received a legacy of 1,300,000 marks
from the late Frau Julie Gerson for the
establishment and erection of a chil-
dren's hospital.
