Zangwill Returns to Zionist Movement
Y. M. H. A. to Aid in Army Welfare
Work
Prospect of Fall of Palestine to Allies Decides Move—
Was Territorialist Zionist.
Israel Zangwill, the distinguished
English author, has announced his re-
turn to the Zionist movement, from
which he has been alienated since
1905. At a meeting in London, held
several days ago, Mr. Zangwill said
that it was almost certain that, at the
end of the war, Palestine would fall
into the hands of the Allied Powers.
This historic event, he said, will give
the Zionists the opportunity to realize
their ideal, whia is the establishment
of a publicly secured, legally recog-
nized home for the Jewish people in
the Holy Land.
Mr. Zangwill explained that lie left
the Zionist movement in 1905 because
he had become convinced that it
would be impossible to create a Jew-
ish State in Palestine under Turkish
rule. At that time he felt it his duty
to seek some other land to which
Jews, dwelling in lands of persecution
and oppression, could flee and es-
tablish themselves on an autonomous
basis. Ile had, therefore, organized
the Jewish Territorial Movement,
which had given 'serious consideration
to Great Britain's proffer of Uganda,
in Africa, to the Jews, and had in-
vestigated the possibilities of Cyren-
aica, Australia, Mexico, Central
America and other possible territor-
ies for a Jewish "haven," but had not
been able to find a suitable location.
Now, however, when Palestine was
about to become free, and there was
strong possibility that it would be
given to the Jews, said Mr. Zangwill,
he wants to do his utmost for Zionism
and give it his full support.

Local Organization, Without Funds, Starts Campaign
for Members.
The local chapter of Y. M. H. A. is
making plans to aid the work of the
National Council of Y. M. H. A. in
serving the Jewish soldiers who may
be called to the colors. The National
Council has formulated detailed plans
for the welfare at mobilization camps,
training camps, and places where
troops may gather in large numbers.
The work of the Y. M. H. A. will
parallel the work of the Y. M. C. A.
welfare program. During the recent
Mexican border trouble the National
Council of Y. M. H. A. maintained
headquarters for Jewish boys at
Douglas, Arizona. The place soon be-
came very popular with the Jewish

soldiers and Jewish citizens of the

tation in army circles.
Every Y. M. H. A. organization in
the country has been appealed to to
assist the General Council in its army
welfare work. Detroit Y. M. H. A.
is ready and willing to do its share,
but the local organization is hampered
because of lack of funds. No attempt
will be made to solicit financial aid
for this necessary work at this time
on account of a possible conflict with
the campaign for the war relief fund.
"We need members," said Jacob
Nathan, president. "We need mem-
bers both for their moral and finan-
cial support. Numbers will accomplish
what a few cannot do. We have,
therefore, inaugurated a membership
campaign, which will terminate with
a smoker on May 10. Every Jewish
citizen of Detroit is urged to be on
the membership roll of the Y. M. H.
A. The fee is $5—a small sum for
the average man—and is the source
of income for our work. The time is
too short for an elaborate campaign.
A number of workers are out but
can reach only a small percentage of
the Jewish population. We must de-
pend in great measure on the volun-
tary assistance of Jews in Detroit.
Every male reader of the Chronicle
should sit right down and write us
a check for $5, and mail it with his
name and address to A. Cooper, 531

CINCINNATI TO HAVE $500,000
Y. M. H. A.
CINCINNATI.—A mass meeting was
held recently to further the movement
on foot to obtain a fund of $500,000 for
the erection of a proper Y. M. H. A.
building. A site has already been se-
lected at the northwest corner of Cen-
tral avenue and Clinton street. It is
claimed that an unknown donor outside
the city has promised to give one-half
of this amount, provided the other $250,-
000 can be raised. To secure this money
there has been appointed to work with
the efficiency committee of the Y. M. H.
A. an auxiliary committee.
