Jacob H. Schiff For Cultural Center
in Palestine

Makes Startling Announcement at Mass Meeting of
Jewish Youth of America.

NEW YORK.—At the first annual
mass meeting of the League of the
Jewish Youth of America, held last
Sunday at the Century Theater, Mr.
Jacob H. Schiff, who came to the
meeting as a guest, but was prevailed
upon to address the gathering, de-
livered himself of some sentiments,
running contrary to his entire prev-
ious stand on Jewish questions. Mr.
Schiff was rightly known as an out-
spoken opponent of all Jewish nation-
al movements, and his declaration for
the need of a "Cultural Center in
Palestine" proved a pleasing surprise
to the great audience which came to
formally launch a countrywide move-
went to further and develop Jewish
sentiment on the part of the Ameri-
can Jewish youth.
Mr. Schiff arrived at the conclusion
of a need for a "Jewish Homeland,"
as he himself explained, after due re-
flection on recent events. After ex-
pressing his fear that Russian freedom
would do away with the spiritual
light which the Jewry of that coun-
try and oppressed centers had for so
long radiated, he went on to explain
the necessity which this fact involved
in this manner:
Homeland for Jews.
"It has come to me while thinking
over recent events, and the statement
I am about to make may surprise
many, that the Jewish people should
at last have a homeland of their own.
I do not mean by that that there
should be a Jewish nation. I am not
a believer in a Jewish nation built
on all kinds of isms, with egotism
as the first, and agnosticism and
atheism among the others. But I
am a believer in the Jewish people
and in the mission of the Jew, and
I believe that somewhere there should

be a great reservoir of Jewish learn-
ing in which Jewish culture might be
furthered and developed, unhampered
by the materialism of the world, and
might spread its beautiful ideas over
the world.
"And naturally, that land would be
Palestine. If that ever develops—and
the present war may bring the de-
velopment of this ideal nearer—it will
not be accomplished in a day or a
year, and in the meantime it is our
duty to keep the flame of Judaism
burning brightly."
War Makes Palestine Posible.
Mr. Schiff, continuing, spoke of the
acquirement of Palestine as a prac-
ticable thing made possible by the
present war. He also made reference
to the patriotic duties that devolve
upon us as Americans.
The League of the Jewish Youth of
America is a new organization, re-
sulting from the efforts of Dr. Bender-
ley, director of the bureau of educa-
tion of the local Kehillah, aided by
Dr. Magnes, who is chairman of the
Karnali. It counts over five thou-
sand members now, but it is hoped
that forty-five thousand will have
have come into its fold before the next
annual meeting is held. Other speak-
ers at this meeting were Mr. Louis
Marshall, who presided; Dr. J. L.
Magnes, Prof. M. M. Kaplan, Joseph
H. Cohen, Louis Sofian, Pincus Buck-
owitz and Lena Sokolow, the last three
being identified with the League.
Among other prominent visitors was
Mr. Nathan Straus. All emphasized
the significance of the meeting and
of the bigger movement among Jewish
youth of America of which the meet-
ing was an outgrowth. At present, it
was said, although the league is in its
infancy, there are 5,000 members. Mr.
Marshall said that 50,000 might be ex-
pected in another year.
The purpose of the league is to
"strengthen Jewish sentiment and in-
terest in this country," and it was an-
nounced that "its members are pledged
to the preservation of Jewish tradi-
tions, to the service of their people,
and to loyalty to the United States."

CAPTURE BY ALLIES WILL
SAVE JERUSALEM FROM
FAMINE.

Advices received recently from
Jerusalem are to the effect that fully
50 per cent of the population of Pal-
estine and Syria is facing death by
starvation. The only chance of relief
is the capture of Jerusalem and the
seaport of Jaffa by the British forces.
This will enable the allies to bring
supplies from Egypt.
The Jews, Mohammedans, and the
Druses of Mount Lebanon are all
suffering alike because the Turkish
governor at Damascus has, through
his officials, seized all horses, mules,
goats, sheep, and cattle. In addition,
the government has not only com-
mandeered all the grain in Palestine
and Syria, but has taken away that
which was to be used as seed, so that
the unfortunate people have not been
able to sow their fields for the com-
ing season.

MR. MORGENTHAU DECLARES
PEACE WILL COME IN
SIX MONTHS.

NEW YORK. — Henry Morgenthau,
former ambassador to Turkey, in an ad-
dress here last Saturday declared : "The
war will last no longer than five or six
months." The sweep of democracy will
bring peace, he said.
