Is Again Delayed—James I. Ellman Receives
Threatening Letters
Delay and procrastination are the
words which describe the attitude
of the Village Council of high-
land Park in investigating serious
charges of cruelty, maltreatment of
prisoners and race prejudice prof-
fered by Lazarus Shapero and
James 1. Ellman against Charles \V.
Seymour, chief of police of the vil-
lage, and his subordinates. A fter
having been postponed to last on-
day, the case was again adjourned
to next Wed: at the request of • the
attorney for Seymour, who pleaded
illness as an excuse for the post-
fect his conduct, Mr. Ellman re-
plied : "If the writers of those let-
ters think they can scare me, they
have another guess coming. 1 am
not going to let up in my efforts to
see that a thorough probe is made
and the guilty parties brought to
justice. On the contrary, the re-
ceipt of the letters has made me all
the more determined to go through
with the case. I am going to fight,
and fight hard."

Ellman Threatened.
Recently the case has developed
another pernicious aspect. James
I. Ellman, the attorney whose de-
termined intercessiOn, in favor. of
Shapero has brought the case be-
fore the attention of the public, has
been in daily receipt :of threatening
letters. These missives, which come
almost daily, are alike in their in-
sistent--demands that he drop the
charges against . the . police depart-
ment and contain various threats of.
what will happen to him in case he
does not desist. A characteristic
letter received by Mr. Ellman is one
which contained a newspaper car :,
toon entitled "You Can't Argue
With a Cop," depicting in one scene
a verbal altercation between a po-
liceman and a civilian, and in the
next the same civilian in a very
much battered state and evidently
quite the worse for the altercation.
Accompanying the cartoon was the
following typewritten note : "You
see, it does not pay to monkey with
the police. Take a tip and lay off."
The note bore the signature "A
Friend."
When asked how the receipt• of
the threatening missives would af-
