Ellman, the attorney whose de- termined intercessiOn, in favor. of Shapero has brought the case be- fore the attention of the public, has been in daily receipt :of threatening letters. These missives, which come almost daily, are alike in their in- sistent--demands that he drop the charges against . the . police depart- ment and contain various threats of. what will happen to him in case he does not desist. A characteristic letter received by Mr. Ellman is one which contained a newspaper car :, toon entitled "You Can't Argue With a Cop," depicting in one scene a verbal altercation between a po- liceman and a civilian, and in the next the same civilian in a very much battered state and evidently quite the worse for the altercation. Accompanying the cartoon was the following typewritten note : "You see, it does not pay to monkey with the police. Take a tip and lay off." The note bore the signature "A Friend."
