What Has Connolly Done That
He Should Receive Dem-
ocratic Votes?

Connolly is a failure even as a boss.
He poses as a leader of the Tam-
many type.
But Tammany will not tolerate a
leader who leads only to defeat.
WHEN Connolly first assumed
local democratic leadership, we had a
Democratic Alayor and numerous im-
- portant city and county offices were
filled by Democrats, with hundreds of
Democrats on the pay-roll.
Today there is not a single Demo-
cratic City or County officer outside
of the courts, and Democrats who are
on the pay-roll have secured their
jobs as turn-coats.
When THE BOSS first began to
boss us the average Democratic vote
was 44 per cent of the total vote in
the City.
AT TI-1 E LAST ELECTION it
was only 39 per cent. The Demo-
cratic vote has decreased in spite of
the increase of population.
WHEN THE BOSS first mounted
, the throne Democratic prospects
were so bright that there was keen
competition for nominations on the
Democratic ticket.
Now the competition is all on the
Republican side, and good men can-
not be induced to accept nominations
on our ticket..
Connolly has wrecked the party in
City, County and State.
Even the strongest Democratic
Wards have been so affected by boss
rule that such lifelong Democrats as
Al. Deimel dare not-run for office on
the Democratic ticket.
Shall we reward the selfish wrecker
who deliberately runs our ship upon
the rocks?
Connolly has driven thousands of
Polish voters out of the Democratic
and into the Republican party.
He has alienated the entire German
vote, which was naturally Democratic,
and killed the Democratic German
paper.
THE BOSS has driven hundreds of
clean, capable young Democrats into
the Republican party by smothering
their laudable ambitions.
He has stuck the knife into the
backs of many deserving Democrats.
He has bitten the hands that fed
him.
lie has defeated his party's nomi-
nee time and again by throwing to
their Republican opponents the vote
of the crooked precincts which he
controls.
Two years ago he defeated Freder-
ick F. Ingrain, the nominee on the
Democratic ticket and the choice of
law abiding citizens, by supporting
Mayor Marx for re-election. In nine
of the precincts controlled by Con-
nolly, and which other Democrats,
backed by THE BOSS, carried by
large majorities, Connolly's friend
Marx received a total of 2,177 votes
and Ingrain only 545.
Less than a year later, at the spe-
cial election' following Judge Phelan's
death, Connolly tried to defeat Judge
Jeffries, who was running on the
same. ticket with him, by throwing to
the Republican nominee, Fred Smith,
the vote which goes as Connolly
orders. The nine Connolly precincts

gave Connolly 1651 votes, Jeffries
only 608 votes, and Smith 1,339 votes.
Should we honor and reward a po-
litical cut-throat?
Connolly violated the law and stole
the Wayne County delegation in 1908,
and boasted of his lawlessness.
He stole the Wayne County delega-
tion again in 1912 in his attempt to
steal the presidential nomination for
harpoon and was proud of his infamy.

Shall we put a small thief in priscn
for stealing a $25 coat ani then put
a p )litical thief in the highest office
in the city?
Connolly has made the word
"Democrat" a word of reproach and
shame by lending the party organiza-
tion to the saloonkeepers and law-
breakers and by placing crooks in of-
ficial positions.
He has steadfastly opposed all re-
forms.
IIc opposed 'Municipal Ownership.
Ile opposed and defeated the .neW
charter.
Ile opposed ballot reform.
Ile supports the proposed four-
year-term salary grab.
Ile has dragged the judicial ermine
through the mire of machine politics.
lie has endangered the lives and
property of our people by his whole-
sale releases of law-breakers and
criminals without any punishment.
Since January 1, 1916, Judge Con-
nolly has had before him 218 pick-
pockets.
Of that number, only one was sent
to prison.
Out of all the automobile drivers;
who killed scme four hundred people,:
only one man was sent to prison.
Dur:ng the last year, 2,734 drivers;
who violated the law were released
without even paying a fine.
Connolly began office holding when.
he began voting and has kept it up!
ever since.
In spite of the constitutional pro-
vision forbidding Circuit Judges
(which is substantially his position),
from begin candidates for any but ju-
dicial offices, he does not have the
decency to resign as judge to ruin for
Mayor.
He has recently secured by trick-
cry and deception the position of Na
tional Committeeman, giving him
control of millions of dollars of fed-
eral patronage in this state.
And now he wants us to give hint
millions of dollars of City patronage.
Ile is not satisfied with having had
his "snout in the trough" all his life..
Ile insists on standing in it.
Ile is not a leader.
A LEADER is followed because of
his principles.
THE BOSS is obeyed through;
fear cupidity. His Satraps and Satel-'
lites "crook the pregnant hinges oh
the knee that thrift may follow fawn-
ing."
Conic omit to the citizens' rally at
the Light Guard Armory and I will
tell you other reasons why Connolly
is not fit for Nlayor of Detroit and
w!ty good citizens should ask for a,
Democratic ticket and write in the;
rat:i of Henry Ford for Governor.
