Accusations Against Jews
Are Groundless
Charges
of Treason Raised Against Russian Jews Proved
to Be Without Foundation.
Petrograd — "The Russian gov-
ernment does not leave a stone un-
turned to unearth new charges, in-
stigate new intrigues, plan new con-
trivances, to avenge its defenceless
enemy, the Jew." writes a corre-
spondent to a Jewish daily in New
York. And, moreover, as soon as
the baseless calumnies haled forth,
it is trumpeted through the em-
pire's newspapers, especially those
which made it, their business to
openly persecute the Jews. And
the result is ofttimes very disas-
trous in view of the fact that the
news is sanctioned by the military
censors who, as responsible heads,
gain the confidence of the peasants,
particularly those of the lower type
who, being illiterate, get their in-
formation usually from an army
officer or priest. This being the
case, it is easily conceivable that no
matter how groundless or foolish
the charges are, they nevertheless
serve as bait for Jew haters.
When the famous Kuzhi slander
first appeared in the "Pravitelst-
VenrIV Viestnick," the official army
organ, the Jews were terrified.
Literature, accusing Jews of shel-
tering enemy troops in basements,
were sent broadcast throughout the
empire, causing no end to the bit-
ter feelings of the incensed igno-
rant soldiers. The priests in their
sermons implored their God to de-
liver "Holy Russia" from the
heresy and vicious hypocrisy of the
"treasonous Zhides."
Who can venture to guess what
the result of such a heinous propa-
ganda might have led to had not
Deputy Kerensky investigated the
Kuzhi affair personally and found
that the whole report was pure in-
vention ; that the Jews, on the con-
trary. were very friendly to the
Russian soldiers and officers and
that there were no basements in
the whole town, except one which
could not admit a single man for
lack of space ? These, naturally,
proved the charges pure fiction.
The Kuzhi case hushed, a new
charge was soon trumped up. It is
known as Jewish treason in Brez-
hill." and perhaps it is not made
more clear elsewhere than in the
"I.ietopis Voini," 07 "War Stories,"
"In Brezhin," avers this paper,
"the following took place: When
our soldiers captured the city, it
was necessary for part of the con-
tingent, numbering several hun-
dred troopers, to make their quar-
ters in a large stone building. In

In his address Prof. Shariman
pointed out the various fields where
there was urgent need for construc-
tive action on the part of Jews.. I le

work caused by the terrible war rag-
ing in F.ti•ope today as one field in
which Jewish onistructive activity
might properly express itself. .\1l-
other opportunity for such service,

the progress made by two genera-
tions of pioneers were now in dan-

Prof. Sharlman concluded with
a strong plea for a greater realiza-
tion on the part of the Tews of the
world in general, and of .\merican
Jews in particular, of what were
their duties at the present critical
period. "\Ve 5110111(1 work," he said,
