Michigan Democrat and
Republican parties endorse
candidates for UMich Board
of Regents election

The Michigan Democratic Party and the Michigan
Republican Party announce their endorsements for the
upcoming Board of Regents election

The Michigan Democratic Party
endorsed Katherine White (D) and
Michael J. Behm (D) for re-election
to the University of Michigan Board
of Regents on April 9 at the 2022 State
Endorsement Convention in Detroit’s
Huntington
Place
convention
center. On April 23, the Michigan
Republican Party endorsed Lena
Epstein (R) and Sevag Vartanian (R)
at DeVos Place convention center in
Grand Rapids, Mich.
White and Behm aim to retain
their seats on the Board of Regents
in the November 8 election, while
Epstein and Vartanian’s elections
would make them the third and
fourth Republicans on the board.
Regent Ron Weiser (R), chairman
of the Michigan Republican Party,
has backed Lauren Hantz for the
election.
The state of Michigan is holding
an election for two of eight seats on
the Michigan State University Board
of Trustees, two of eight seats on
the University of Michigan Board
of Regents and two of eight seats on
the Wayne State University Board of
Governors on November 8, 2022.
Article VIII § V of the Michigan
Constitution
provides
for
the
election of the governing boards
of three Michigan universities, the
University of Michigan, Michigan
State University and Wayne State

Paani raises over $1 million
during Ramadan

BUSINESS

A volunteer-based non-profit organization raises
funds to uplift communities in Pakistan affected by
the current water crisis

This year, Paani, the volunteer-
based
non-profit
organization
dedicated to uplifting communities
in Pakistan that are impacted by the
water crisis, has raised about $1.53
million to fund their projects. Water
availability per person per year in
Pakistan is declining due to climate
change and rising demand for food
production.
Paani’s
fundraising
efforts occurred during the month
of Ramadan, a holiday celebrated by
millions of Muslims worldwide. Their
Ramadan campaign was reported
to have raised $905,155 in 2021 and
approximately $250,000 in 2020
to provide food and clean drinking
water in Pakistan.
University of Michigan alum
Sikander “Sonny” Khan, one of the
founders of the organization, said that
Paani’s efforts have created a bigger

global impact since its launch in 2017
by U-M students.
“It started off in an effort to,
obviously, leverage our opportunities
and resources to create a greater
global impact,” Khan said. “It quickly
grew into something more because
there was so much support and love
for the transparency of our work.
Because of the way that we operate,
we make sure that we keep the
donor and the people that are part
of the experience in the experience
by sending them photos, sending
them videos, sending them location
details.”
Khan said Paani raised over
$3 million in total within the past
three years of fundraising during
Ramadan. Khan said that Paani
plans to expand their charity efforts
outside of Pakistan, particularly
in countries in Western Asia and
Africa.
