Demonstrating his unique abil-
ity to "double in brass," Sonny
Dunham kept J-Hoppers in the
dancing mood last weekend, alter-
nating numbers with Tommy Dor-
sey.
Singer Pete Hanley and the
Trombone Choir added their tal-
ents to present feature specialties
with the Dunham band both
nights. Although well-known to
campus dancers from their ap-
pearances at Panhel Ball in 1946
and at Pay-Off Dance in 1943,
the Dunham outfit was playing its
first J-Hop engagement.
Dunham got his start as the
"foremost trumpet and trombone
stylist" while playing his first job.
Starred in the trombone section
of Paul Tremaipe's orchestra, he
began toying around with a bor-!
rowed trumpet. His sensational
technique impressed the leader,
who encouraged Dunham to be-
come a dual instrumentalist.
A year later he joined Glen
Gray's Casa Loma Band, featured
in both trumpet and trombone
sections. Arrangements of "Pagan
Love Song" and "Memories of
You" by Dunham made a partic-
ular success.
In 1940, Dunham left Casa
Loma to form his own band. Since
that time the Sonny DunhamOr-
chestra became a stellar attrac-
tion in theatres, hotels and ball-
rooms from coast to coast.
Press Agent Risks
Leader's 'Record'
J-Hoppers last week-end had a
chance to test the veracity of a
press agent's claim.
According to Sonny Dunham's
publicity manager it is "a matter
of record that Tommy Dorsey, as
well as Harry James, merely stare
in disbelief when either of them
catch Sonny's performances."
Perhaps those were looks of
awe from the Dorsey to the Dun-
ham bandstand, or maybe Tom
my's just gotten accustomed to
the playing of "America's fore-
most trumpet and trombone spe-
cialist."
