Lancer, Bride, & Lily

Three Shows
Are Billed
For Hoppers
By Guy M. Whipple, Jr.
J-Hoppers will have their choice
of three movies over the festive week-
end. One of the offerings appears,
from the manner in which the na-
tion's reviewers have treated it, to be
an outstanding production. This is
the Majestic's Saturday-through-
Tuesday show, "The Lives of a Ben-
gal Lancer."
Saturday will see the last run of
Barbara Stanwyck and Warren Wil-
liam in "Secret Bride." This one
would seem to be the poorest of the
trio. The third J-Hop picture, to be
shown at the Michigan Sunday-
through-Wednesday, is Claudette
Colbert's, and is called "The Gilded
Lily." This should be second best,
but this column hasn't heard much
about it and your guess is the one

in detail:

Four years in the making, "The
Lives of a Bengal Lancer" is based
on Francis Yeats-Brown's famous
story of one of the most heroic fight-
ing regiments in history. Paramount,
according to the advance notices, in-
sisted on "making it right," and took
the time because it figured the public
would make it up to them in box of-
fice receipts. But whether it is a fi-
nancial success or not, the "Lives"
should be an artistic treat.
In the cast are Gary Cooper, Fran-
chot Tone, Richard Cromwell. Sir
Guy Standing, C. Aubrey Smith, the
old timer Monte Blue, and Kathleen
Burke.
The setting is the dangerous open
country of Northwest India, where,
in the midst of teeming rebellion
(against the British imperialism), a
small group of British officers com-
