Dere I wuz, sitting nice and quiet- like wit nuttin on me mind but tought of de boids and dat kind of stuff, when it comes up an hits me like I-don-know- wut. Holy smokes, I sez, as I jumps up in de air. Holy smokes, I sez, de J-Iop! An dere I was an I knowed dere was somethin dat I forgot: de J-Hop. So, wut about dis J-Hop, you sez? Now, lissen, pal, how long you bin driv- in' in dis boig? Oh, a year an a half, eh? Ah, yer nuttin but a punk. When yau bin pushin onea dese tings aroun for as long as me, den, pal, ya won't need nobody to tell ya wut is de J-Hop. Wait'll ya see de class dat toins out for dis ting, pal. I'm tellin ya, ya won't be- lieve yer eyes when ya sees dem dames wit der almost nuttin-on dresses. I'm tellin ya, pal, dere aint nuttin like it. And dose guys. Acourse, ya cauldn't get me ta put on onea dem soupanfilh tings but I guess dat's da way dey like it. An dere all smilin an laughin. An, some is laughin too much. Ya know wut I mean, don'tcha, pal? Yeh, dat's right. An music, say, dat's where da ting is de best. I'm tellin ya dey've had de best bands in de woild for dis ting. Who is de ones dis year? Wut's dat? Count Basie and Henry Busse. I don know much about dat Basie guy, but dat Busse is plenty all right. I remember back in '34, when dey announced dat Busse was onea da bands, ya could hear de wails a mileaway. But say, he toined out plenty okay and de kids dey ate it up. De udder band dey had dat year was a guy named .now lemme see . . wut was dat guy's name again . . . oh yeh: Kemp. Have ya hoid of him? De foist year I wuz runnin dis cab5 aroun town, 1928, dey had tree bands fer da Hop. Dat wuz de foist time. John De foist guy ever to trow a baton over who made Olsen soun like Wayne King Sda goal-posts at a footballgame come in slow motion. Da kids just hung back to lead his band in '37. Dat was aroun dat bandstand all night. George Olsen and he wuz plenty good. Now, how do ya like dat, pal? An On de udder sides de room was a col- here I wuz almost forgettin about da ored gent named Earl (Father) Hines J-Hop. Chapman, who come from de Bal Tab- arin in Chicago who wuz plenty big, Em- erson Gill, a noise in Cleveland at dat time, and McKinneys Cottonpickers, who wuz de ragea de East. De next year, I can remember like as if it wuz yesterda. De band dey gr/ wuz Coon-Sanders. An, lemme tell ya somethin, pal, at dat time dey wuz Goodman, Clinton and Dorsey all wrapped in one. In 1930, Fletcher Hen- derson and Ted Weems wuz de music- men. Dat wuz a combintion, huh? In dose days, Henderson was recognized as onea de best in de business. Jan Garber wuz onea de guys in '31 and '36. I remember takin a couplea de boys in de band from de hotel and hoid dem tell how Garber picked up de band in a dime-a-dance joint near Buffalo. Ain't dat a pip? Herby Kay wuz de udder outfit in '31, and Jimmy Lunce- ford tsole de show from Garber in '36. I tink de kids enjoyed him bettern anya de udders. In 1932, I kin remember takin Paul Whiteman from de depot. He give me a halfabuck tip. And, say, his band wus plenty okay too. Russ Morgan distoibed de proceedins from de udder side dat year. Den came Ben Bernie and Don Pedro, neidera which wuz much good. An dey picked a couple lemons again in '35 when de signed up dat Art Kas- sel guy and Anson Weeks. Dey wuzn't so terrible but dey coulda done better. J-HOP -- J-HOP -- J-HOP -- J-HOP - Qree l gS -OPPERS The"Perfect Valentine" Always Wanted - Always Welcome 01 r w-- x '.
