Local Cabbies Like Tipsy J-oppers

Concensus of opinion in local taxi
circles reveals the fact that the liberal-
ity of students at J-Hop is the feature
of the tradition which cabmen most
enjoy.
"It don't make no difference what
kind of liquor they're drinkin', it's the
old tips that count," said one of the
taximen. "And, buddy, during J-Hop
they sure are liberal-for a change,"
he added.
"I'll never forget the time I got a
five buck tip just for a trip from the
I-M Building to the Parrot," another
taxi driver said. "I guess he liked the
woman he had with him pretty well and
was tryin' to make an impression, al-'
though they all try to do that J-Hop
or no J-Hop," he said. "Of course, .

might have been generosity or just
drunkenness," he quoted, "but it don't
make much difference to me. That five
spot looked pretty good."
"That stuff about them all getting
drunk is all the bunk," another cab-
men said, "at least according to my,
definition of drunk. A man ain't tight
as long as he can navigate under his
own power," he solemnly added. "Most
of them can do that, although at times
they find the going pretty rough."
Another cab driver claimed that to
him most students were "slap-happy"
anyway, and that, therefore, he could
not tell whether they were "plastered"
or not.
"There ain't much pettin' goin' on
early in the evening during J-Hop," one
of the drivers said. "At least, I don't
see any. No, man, when I'm drivin', I'm
drivin', and I keep my eyes on the road.
But I can't help my hearin' things,"
he added. "And early in the night, the
boys do get their faces slapped once in
a while, and from the sound of things,
some of those babes sure pack a mean
wallop," he said. "I don't know what it
is though, maybe it's just that the girls
get tired of slappin', or maybe it's
drunkenness, or just plain appreciation,
but the slappin' sort of wears off later
in the night. A least I don't hear no
slaps, he added.

the fun really starts. There are plenty
of people around with red ribbons on
their chests who will tell you where to
put your coat. When you have put away
your coat it will be time to go down and
try to find your date if you haven't al-
ready checked her with your coat.
Once you get inside, I mean really
inside where the mob can get at you, it
is every man for himself. There is a
band playing no matter what anyone
tells you and if you don't believe it just
go up to the hospital and ask someone
who got there early and saw it before
the crush of the crowd got them. Don't
let the fact that you can't hear the
music bother you. As soon as the band
starts to play a piece the news is re-
layed back. When the message gets to
you, just whistle it softly to yourself
and jiggle up and down.
After you have been there about 15
minutes it will be time to get your coat
again. Remember what I said about
Roy Sutherland, of Ann Arbor, to be
chaperons. Saturday the group is go-
going into the Yacht Club.
For their party Kappa Sigma are hav-
ing Mr. and Mrs. John M. Griffin, of
Ann Arbor, and Mr. and Mrs. A. M.
Peterson, of Detroit. Saturday they will
have an informal party at the Country
Club.
Lambda Chi Alpha is having a formal
dinner at the Union before J-Hop, and
an informal dance Saturday. Chaper-
ons will be Mr. and Mrs. William C.
Steere, and Mr. Mrs. Al Baker, of Ann
Arbor.
Phi Gamma Delta is having a hay-
ride and radio dance Saturday, and
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Barker of Detroit
are chaperons, along with Prof. and
Mrs. Richard Myers, of Ann Arbor.
Congress is having a breakfast in the
Main Dining Room of the Union after
the dance, and for chaperons they are
having Registrar and Mrs. Ira M. Smith
and Prof. and Mrs. Bennett Weaver.

Getting a taxi is something of a prob-
lem but it is comparatively simple if
you happen to have the voice of the late
Joe Humphries, Madison Square Garden
fight announcer, the running ability 'of
Jesse Owens and the combative talents
of a lumber-jack. If you have your own
car, just pick up the fenders and toss
them in the back seat and drive home.
What you do from then on is your own
business and far be it from me to offer
any advice.
After Participation comes the inevit-
able Recuperation. It is mostly your
state of mind which counts here. Don't
get discouraged in the first month. You
will be as goo da man as your grand-
father was at the age of 90 in two
months at the outside. Walking with
a cane never hurt anyone and whats a
cauliflower ear -among friends. Just
take plenty of steam baths and don't
figure on doing any. heavy thinking or
working for a while and you will be top-
notch.
Me, I am just sitting at home quietly
this year. Freshmen come and sit
around my feet yawning and trying to
keep awake while I force them to listen
to my J-Hop experiences. There's really
nothing to it if you know how to go
about it.

Chi Phi is having Mr. and Mrs. Owen
R. Baker and Mr. And Mrs. Wayne
Andrae of Detroit to chaperon their
houseparty, which is one of the largest
on campus, with twenty-seven couples
attending. Saturday they are having an
informal radio dance, to be. followed by
a sleighride.
Alpha Tau Omega will have as chap-
erons Mr. and Mrs. Murray Van Wag-
goner, of Lansing, and Mr. and Mrs.
L. A. Wikel, of Ann Arbor. Saturday
they will have a formal dinner and
dance.
Chi Psi has asked Dr. and Mrs. George
Flagle, of Battle Creek, and Mr. and
Mrs. Wood Perret to act as chaperons,
and they are having a formal dinner
dance Saturday, with Moe Carter's
orchestra playing.
Delta Kappa Epsilon is having an in-
formal dance Saturday, with Mr. and,
Mrs. Charles Green, of Monroe, and
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Meyn, of Ann
Arbor, for chaperons.
Delta Tau Delta is having an informal

dinner at the Haunted Tavern before
their dance Saturday night. Chaperons
for their houseparty will be Mr. a;
Mrs. William Jeffries, of Ann Arbor,
and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Williams, of
Cadillac.
Sigma Nu is having a dinner at the
Dearborn Inn before the dance, and
breakfast at the League afterward. Sig-
ma Chi is having a house party, and
has asked Mr. and Mrs. Earl Morrow,
of Detroit, to be chaperons.
Theta Chi is having a bowling and
tobaggoning party Saturday afternoon,
a sleighride and barn dance Saturday
night, and Sunday they are having a
lunch and theatre. party. Chaperons
for their house party are Mr. and Mrs.
Roland Hodge, of Pontiac, and Mr. and
Mrs. Bruce Palmer, of Ann Arbor.
Sigma Phi Epsilon is having a break-
fast at the League after the dance, and
informal dance Saturday, and a dinner
Sunday. Chaperons will be Prof. and
Mrs. J. K. Pollock and Mrs. K. C. Car-
ney.
Psi Upsilon, in addition to their dinner
and breakfast Friday, is having a for-
mal dinner and dance Saturday, with
Bill Boyd's orchestra. Chaperons will
be Mr. and Mrs. Robert Miller, of Ann
Arbor,
Sigma Alpha Epsilon is having a ra-
dio-dance Saturday, and Mr and Mrs.
Robert Graham, and Mr. and Mrs. Walt
