How Times Have Changed: Dean Bursley
Our Uncle Joe Tells Of The Time
He Went To The Big litop In 1896
"Mutiny In The Ranks" or "You G:
Your Way and I'll Go Mine" could well
be the title of J-Hop activities at the
University in 1896 as told by Dean
Joseph A. Bursley, who was a semi-green
freshman at that time.
For 19 years prior to that date the
Palladium, a group of nine of the oldest
fraternities on campus, were the sole
dictators of how, when, where, and why
the great Michigan custom of Junior
class dances was held. New fraternity
and independent groups raised their
voices in protest, but not to much avail.
The Chi Psis, Alpha Delta Phis, Delta
Kappa Epsilons, Sigma Phis, Zeta
Psis, Psi Upsilons, Zeta Theta Pis, Phi
Kappa Psis and Delta Tau Deltas were
adamant-no complete control-no
party!
The Regents were of asother opinion,
however, and stated that if the dance
was to be held in the Waterman Gym-
nasium, as it usually was, the Independ-
ents and newer fraternity men were to
be consulted in making the arrange-
ments.
These high and mighties of the sacred
circle of the Palladium voted to a man
to follow the all or none principle, so
they took their girls, chaperons, orches-
tras and all the rest of the trimmings
and went by special train to Toledo
where they held their 20th Annual Ball
on Feb. 14.
The Independents, in no way daunted
by the Palladium's desertion, manned
their forces and had their first Annual
Promenade on the same night at Water-
man Gymnasium.
That was the first and last time in the
history of the University that two such
dances were in progress on the same
date in different cities.
In reminiscing further, Dean Bursley
said, concerning the house parties, "As
a rule they lasted until 6 or 7 in the
morning and couples didn't traipse all
around town from one hamburger place
to another. They stayed at the house.
Intoxicating drinks weren't even men-
tioned. No girl would think of looking at
a man with liquor on his breath. How
times have changed!"
