BAY Naval Reserves Try Skirmishes Drilhs, Field Worw, Smokers, Take UIp Time of Men in Com- panies Routine work and speculation as to the possible time of leaving for the training ships are the only affairs bothering the Seventh and Eighth di- visions of the Michigan naval reserves these days. The routine work consists of a regular morning march to the hills surrounding Barton pond or to the boulevard where short but trying skirmish drills are held. Afternoons are taken up by lectures, signal drills, and seamanship practice for the deck and line men and by stoking practice for the engineering division. Last night the Eighth division held a smoker and dance at the Union and the Seventh will gather at the Pack- ard academy for a dance tonight. Of- ficers of the divisions hold some doubt as to the success of the two dancing parties on account of a soreness de- veloped in the pedal extremities of some of the reserves on their morning hikes. REPORT FAVORABLY TO U. S. SENATE ON SELECTIVE SYSTEM (Continued from Page One) gard to their other responsibilities. Men may come from the farm, or from the mines, or from the factories, orl centers of business who ought not to come, but who ought to stand back of the army in the field, and see that they get everything that they need, and that the people of the country are c astained in the meantime. "Selective draft, in short, has at its heart this idea, that there is uni- versal obligation to serve, and that a public authority should choose those upon whom the obligation of military service shall rest, and also, in a sense, select those who shall do the re- mainder of the nation's work. Provides for Volunteers "If adopted, the bill will do more, I believe, than any other single instru- ment'ility to create impression of uni- versal service in the army, and out of it, and if properly administered, will be a great source of stimulation. Those who feel that we are turning away altogether from the volunteer prznwiple seem to forget that some 600.000 men will be needed to fill the rank, of the regular army and the natit.nal guard, and that a great field of individual enthusiasm lays there -, ide open. U l" III NOW PLAYING IN NEW YORK AND CHICAGO INDEFINITELY The chairman of the senior law so- cial committee stated last night that aside from adding some military spirit to the arrangements, the war preparations on the campus would not change the original plans which were made for the annual Crease dance to be held a week from tonight at the Union. The tickets went on sale to the sen- ior laws yesterday and will be opened to the Law school at noon today at the Union. If any remain after next Monday morning they will be put on sale to the campus. The number has been limited to 100 and 25 remain un- scld last night.
