Koch & Herine. ft TO HOLD EXAINTIONS FOR N YPAYMASTERS SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY OFFERED FOR UNIVERSITY MEN MAY 15 Competitive examinations will be held at navy yards throughout the country on May 15 for appointments as assistant paymasters in the Unit- ed States navy. The examination is open to all candidates without any restrictions and will be. conducted on a strictly merit basis. The rank of an assistant paymaster is that of ensign and his pay at sea is $1,870 a year and on shore duty he receives $1,700. Promotions are made through successive grades up to and including pay director, with the rank of rear admiral. In order to obtain candidates of the highest caliber, only such men will be examined as have received permission from the bureau of navigation, to which bureau applications for ap- pointment should be made in hand- writing. Letters of commendation from former employers, teachers, and those who know the candidate person- ally should accompany the application. The openings for assistant paymas- ter -n the navy present a special op- portunity for college students and graduates. The examination is of a general nature including 10 subjects. Bursley a course in the care of military stores is being given. This takes up the proper methods of storage and ac- counting. Prof. H. S. Sheppard is teaching a course in signals. The use of the telephone and the wireless telegraph in war time is studied. Another subject under the military engineering series is the one in rail- way transportation, which deals with quick methods of building and destroy- ing railroads. This course is given by Prof. H. E. Riggs of the civil engineer- ing department. Prof. W. C. Hoad of the department of sanitary engineering is conducting a course in sanitation. This is offered primarily for students in the sanitary engineering department. Full information as to the details of the work, the hours at which the courses are given, credit received, and eligibility of students who desire to enroll may be obtained from the pro- fessors in charge of the work. GIVE ORDERS ESTABLISHING RESERVE OFFICERS' CAMPS Washington, April 18.-Orders for establishing intensive training camps for the officers' reserve corps in the army department were issued today by the war department. The general plan is to train the reserves three or four months, when they will be full fledged officers, and then place many of them at training recruits.
