McLaughlin on "The French Soldier" before the Cercle Francais at 5 o'clock yesterday after- noon in Tappan hall. Professor McLaughlin told of the wonderful spirit shown by the women. TFrench Steamer Sunk by Germans Danton Class Battleship Capsizes 45 Minutes After Being Hit by Submarine Berlin, March 20.-A large French battleship of the Danton class was sunk by a German submarine in the Mediterranean yesterday, it was offi- cially announced today. "A German submarine commanded by Lieutenant- Captain Moraht on March 19 in the western Mediterranean sunk a large French battleship of the Danton class protected by destroyers," the state- ment said. "The ship was running a zigzag course immediately after being hit, but listed heavily and capsized 45 min- utes later. There are six battleships of the Danton class. They displace 18,028 tons, are 475 feet long, and have 84-foot beams. They carry four 12-inch guns and 12 nine and 1-4 inch guns, two torpedo tubes, and smaller rifles.
