Lowly (corduroys Cop the Laurels Anent the shafts of caustic criticism directed at the good old corduroys worn by the engineers, read this bit of strange truth that redounds with not only the glory of their durability, but the efficacy of the famous slide rule pocket. Nerves were strained and hearts were quivering yesterday when sev- eral students representing a number of the different colleges of the Uni- versity were engaged in a death struggle for supremacy in the game of banks and pockets, pool. Victory in this crucial match, as logic goes, would indicate the superior qualities of the winner's department, and as that above all minor considerations of scholarship is paramount in the sporting blood element, the combat- ants were vieing with every ability at their command. An engineer, a law, and a medic were bunched in the race, and while the boilermaker was deporting him- self rather gently for his genus, the two more dignified professions united in their efforts to defeat him by work- ing on his emotions with sinister al- lusions to his learning, tools, and habiliment. Goaded to desperation, the engineer resolved to make his technique tell. Notwithstanding the scorn of his natural enemies, he un- sheathed his slide rule from its velvet scabbard, and measuring the distances between the balls and the banks, made some rapid calculations and smashed away with his cue and cleared the table. The law observed that the verdict was unreasonable, and that the slide rule was irrelevant, incompetent, and immaterial. He- says he will appeal. The medic said that the patient did very well under the circumstances. And the engineer has already been promised a place in an honor society.
