Pensacola, Fla., Jan. 26.-Establish- to win rapid promotion in the "sold- ing a precedent by being the first avi- ator and owner of an aeroplane to en- list as a private in his country's mil- itary service, Charles E. Hays, car- toonist, reporter, and birdman, today joined the flying squad of the United States marines at the aeronautic sta- tion here. The youthful aviator, who rejected the temptation to 4go abroad in belief that his country has the first demand for his services, is eager to demon- strate his skill as a flyer, and expects iers of the sea." fiays says that he hopes to achieve success through merit alone, and ig- noges the inference that by owning and operating an aeroplane he is bound to rise in the world.
