I. ,ickling' With this issue Tie Daily siseds publication unntil Tuesday, Feb. 11 1917. SY"EL(Three years ago when the present seniors were reluctantly shedding high school literary society pins a member of their class conceived a good idea. Every freshman, upon meeting another yearling, was to greet him by saying boldly and without the formality of in- troduction: "Howdy, Frosh" The object of the movement was to promote a spirit of democracy and good feeling, as well as to make the business of getting acquainted as simple as possible. But it didn't work Partly because the salutation was not happily chosen, and chiefly because most of us are unable to "get fa- miliar" with people we do not know, a real idea died. The failure of the movement was tn- fortunate. Michigan students need to crack off this veneer of reserve which some aesthetic ones term "polish." Its real name is "tarnish." And the fir t step in process of correction is to learn how to say "Hello! " This word is a simple, unassuming sign of recogni- tion that serves the purpose perfectly. When you meet a strange student who looks at you as if he knows you, don't freeze up and look the other way. Say "Hello!" When this has happened two or three times, you will be ac- quainted. The next time you may do one of the most important things in college life-you may make a friend. The melancholy days have come. ms foran hon.r ech cla hy atl see the. leul--bctr le 1.o.2Nitwek' sar A-"ll,.t PHONE 294 lw 213 E.
