The fur coats shown this seasor e cut on long full lines, either hang- .g free from the shoulders, or with e fullness confined in a belt at the ck. One of the special features of .e latest automobile coats is their ngth. Forty-five and fifty inches s been the popular length. Nearly I the coats are well equipped with rge pockets, either trimmed with rge fur buttons or with a band of ntrasting fur. In the most fashionable wear for en, racoon coats have been in such eat demand that the price of that r has increased a great deal due to e growing scarcity of the raw ma- r t t r s e ,I Toledo, and Indianapolis. In general, work in the engineering departments of automobile companies is light dur- ing July and August, thus making it' possible for the summer session to serve many from the active field who could not leave for the regular col- lege year. Several prominent engi- neers with whom the matter has been discussed have commended the gen- eral plan and have expressed the opinion that the course would be well attended and perform an important service to the automobile industry. The course as laid out should appeal to several classes. 1. Engineering graduates from this and otheruniversities. 2. Men from the engineering, ex- perimental and technical sales depart- ments of automobile companies, who have not had the advantage of techni- cal automobile education. ILa The advance notes on spring motor tyles for women indicate that both ew colors and new material will be hIown, Sea green, spruce blue, char- reuse, and periwinkle are some of he new shades to be offered. Again .olivia, the popular fabric of the utumn is to occupy the place of rominence in the spring coats. Diag- nal velours, a new fabric called looping," and a variation of Bolivia nown as "Anzac Bolivia" will also ank high in fashion's favor. The cut of the spring coats will be s full as that shown in the winter odels, but they will be somewhat horter. They will be marked by nov- 1 arrangements and collars and belts. JEW COURSE TO BE GIVEN IN.SUMMER. port Automobile Engineering Course to Offer Special Appeal to Several Classes Much interest is being shown in the inouncement by the engineering col- ge of a special automobile short purse to be offered for the first time t the coming summer session. The urse as outlined will include a nom- al eight hours, to be selected from .e 11 hours of special automobile ork offered-three in general work, o in laboratory, three in engine eory and design, three in chassis eory and design. The University of Michigan has a rategic location in the center of the itomobile industry and this summer urse will be immediately available employees of the various compan- adies Now Have 97onth to Decide 3. Teachers of mechanical engi- neering who have not had active ex- perience in this important branch. 4. Undergraduates who wish to take this work in the summer session in order.to pursue advanced research work in the regular session. The general description of the cour- ses to be offered and from which the eight hours may be- elected, are de- scribed as follows: M. E. 29s. Gasoline " automobiles. A general course covering the funda- emental principles of automobile oper- ation and design, and their applica- tion in current, automobile practice. M. E. 30s. Automobile engine theory and design. This course covers the complete theory and design of the automobile engine. It includes the calculation and design of crank case, cylinder block, pistons, connecting rods, crank shaft, flywheel, cam shaft, cams, timing gears, valves, oiling sys- tem, cooling system. M. E. 31s. Automobile chassis the- ory and design. This course covers the complete theory and design of the automobile chassis. It includes the frame and brackets, clutch, transmis- sion, drive shaft, rear axle and differ- ential, frbnt axle and steering mech- anism; spring suspension, brakes. M. E. 32. Automobile testing. Ex- perimental laboratory study of mod- ern automobiles and their character- istics. Tests covering horse power developed, fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, mechanical efficiency, heat balance, study of timing, cooling, oil- ing systems, ignition systems, car- buretors and carburetion, indicator cards. In offering courses such as this short course, which will be available to those who are qualified to pursue specialized intensive work along a certain line of study, the summer ses- sion performs a distinct service. In automobile work, especially, there is opportunity for the University to lead all others and to serve greatly its most remarkable industry. Wandering Garage for Los Angeles Alfred Gill, once a Los Angeles bank clerk, and later a highway wanderer for his health, roams the vicinity of Los Angeles with a garage mounted on his Chevrolet. A small truck on the chassis carries tires, oil, tools and a small line of accessories. He is a familiar sight to tourists, and the up- keep on his garage is so low he is re- covering his health with little actual cost to himself. Traffic Laws Changed to Allow Women Time to Make Up Minds While Shopping How long does it take a woman to make up her mind? This has been the question of debate between the city commission and the merchants of Chattanooga, Tenn., and at present the merchants seem to be the victors. Until recently the time that a motor car could be parked on a business street was limited to twen- ty minutes but the commission has rescinded this amendment to the traf- fic laws, and now milady may shop at her leisure. The women and the merchants join- ed hands-figuratively, of course-in protesting against the new ordinance and the shopping district .finally suc- ceeded in bringing about the desired change. It was declared that many, of the shoppers received great injury to their nervous systems because of trying to decide on the proper color and material within a third of an hour. If the people turn out every day as they did last night, the 1917 Detroit automobile show will be the most successful given thus far by the Detroit Automobile Dealers' associa- tion. AUTOMOBILE LABORATORY HAS NEW IMPROVEMENTS (Continued from Page Two) for running. Tests on this will be made by the M. E. 32 class next se- mester. Also construction is under way for a testing frame for a Chalmers 6-30 and for mounting the distinctive Chalmers clutch , and transmission urit upon a special frame for demon- strating the action of this selective type transmission and multiple disk, dry clutch. In connection with M. E. 32 laboratory courses, tests will be made on the road for the first time. The Hudson Motor Co. has recently sent in two complete cylinder blocks and two of the famous super-six crank shafts together with valves, pistons and other minor parts. These are being used at the present time in connection with the mechanical drawing classes and by sections in automobile design. Carburetor Tests In this laboratory one of the most complete tests possible is given to all carburetors in connection with the dynamometer system. Recent im- provements have provided a special automatic counter. This is an air ven- .olamouom 01 JM1 . pI Ias ul pnl gauge for measuring the amount of air which goes to the carburetor. An air tight box is placed around the carbu- retor with tubes connected to the monometer gauge for running accurate tests upon carburetors. Also an auto- matic electric gasoline measuring scale has been combined with a mechanism for operating a stop watch so that the time during which a given weight of gasoline is consumed can be read direct.
